BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 I wanted to analyze the fact that we need tough guys/enforcers/policemen whatever your interpretation is, and just wanted to acknowledge the fact that virtually every other team in the NHL has at least one. Anaheim - Shawn Thornton Atlanta - Boulton Boston - Alberts Buffalo - Peters and Mair Calgary - McCarty and Godard Carolina - Craig Adams Chicago - Lapointe Colorado - Laperriere Columbus - Shelly Dallas - Barnaby (Like him or hate him, he can fight) Edmonton - Greene Florida - Montador, Bertuzzi Los Angelas - Ivanans Minnesota - Boogaard Montreal - Souray, Murray, and Downey Nashville - Tootoo, Hordichuk New Jersey - Janssen NY Islanders - Witt, Simon NY Rangers - Hollweg, Orr, Avery Ottawa - Neil, Mcgrattan Philadelphia - Eager, Fedoruk Phoenix - Josh Gratton, Laraque, Boynton Pittsburgh - Thorburn San Jose - Bell, Clowe St. Louis - Matt Walker, Mayers Tampa Bay - Andre Roy Toronto - Belak Vancouver - Cowan Washington - Brashear, Erksine Now, Detroit - NOBODY The reason why I thought of this was I put Detroit in a hypothetical situation relating to the Ottawa/Buffalo brawl. For example, if it was let's say Kronwall or Markov laying out Drury, and Buffalo puts their enforcers against our finesse players. We have no one who can settle the score. Media says that Pittsburgh needs one more than anybody, but Pittsburgh's 3 toughest players are probably tougher than our toughest active player who would probably be Markov. I just made this post to prove how us, the Detroit Red Wings are in more need of a tough guy than ANY other team in the NHL. So forget looking for scorers at the deadline, get a tough guy. It's an obvious necessity for any team looking for success.

I think this list can be broken down to guys who help their team by 'enforcing' and guys who just have a wolverine-like bad temper...) Rice 42 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Fighting doesn't matter in the playoffs. Getting one guy who can fight won't make our whole lineup gritty.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Yeah, but still, in the playoffs, cheap shots do tend to happen. Bullying, everything. Players will be looking to take off Datsyuk and Zetterberg's head. None of our players can do nothing to prevent the possibility. That happens in the playoffs, and for that, an enforcer of some kind would help.
Heaton 1 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 First off, Craig Adams isn't an enforcer, the Canes don't have an enforcer they just have good team toughness. Ryan Clowe and Mark Bell aren't the Sharks enforcers, Scott Parker is. Thirdly, Montreal doesn't have an enforcer and even if they did, Souray wouldn't be it. Dallas also doesn't have an enforcer, they did with Barnaby but not anymore. They have guys who can fight but thats it. When I think of enforcers I think of McGrattan and Niel, thsoe guys. The scrappy guys like Bootland aren't enforcers.
BeeRYCE 2 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Well the players I named were players that can protect skilled players. Souray sure did a good job protecting Koivu by attacking Armstrong.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 We still have 0 players that fight. Even with guys like Darren McCarty and Joey Kocur on the team, Clde Lemieux still took cheap shots at Slava Kozlov and Kris Draper. Scott Stevens didn't prevent Domi from charging Niedermayer. Having a tough guy doesn't prevent cheap shots. Worrell, Cummins, Foote, and Barnaby didn't prevent Bertuzzi from ending Steve Moore's career. If a guy is going to take a cheap shot like that, no amount of guys who fight will prevent it.

esteef 2,679 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Having a tough guy doesn't prevent cheap shots. Who said it would? This stupid rebuttal always comes out when people call for toughness. Everyone knows it won't "prevent" it, but it will give the team the ability to respond when someone head hunts Zetts or Dats in the playoffs. Hell, someone took a run at Zetts last night in the Preds game and just missed. Who would've done something about it had he been layed out like Drury? Having a tough guy prevents a lot more cheap s*** from happening than would happen without one. A lot of smaller non-fighters take more liberties when they know there's no one there to stop them. Just ask every player on the Wings right now... esteef
MotorCityMiracle 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Barnaby can be officially classified as disabled. Now we are one of two. Eheh. Ohh hell no lol. Dallas has had 28 Fighting Majors this year. Krys Barch and Steve Ott account for 10. www.hockeyfights.com <--- Great Hockey Fights Site. Detroit has basically one "Real" fight, with Danny Markov. Norton had 4 Hugfests before injuring himself while falling, and Franzenstein was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Minnesota Wild have only 9 fights, but also have Derek Boogard. 2nd Lowest Fight Totals.

Again with the 'prevent' word. Of course your examples above did indeed all happen. All I ask is we take one minute and ponder if players like Stevie's and Gretzky's long long careers just happened by accident. I think it's quite a slap in the face to the other guys. Mess just jumped over the boards to fight (during a playoff series - triggering an auto-3-game suspension). He did this just because he felt like fighting and wanted 3 games off? Gretzky went untouched for the remainder of their run. Oh and ask Stevie if he wants 50 goal scorer Shepp or headcase Bobby on his wing. There's gotta be a reason for his answer. aloha
