Modano

Story is, Modano is not a good leader of men, and let the position negatively affect his play. Plus, if I remember correctly, he barked up a few wrong trees (likely publically calling the owner out for not spending enough, and as cool as that sounds it is still biting the hand that feeds you).

Mike Modano is a great player, and I think a lot of him. He's adored in Dallas and is the face of the franchise. I was shocked when they took the C from him and gave it to Morrow (who is a great guy in his own right). I thought at first the pressure was getting to him, but I was corrected by insiders in Dallas who said it was not his idea to relinquish the C, far from it.

Mike has been pretty vocal, and I think it did effect his play. So the brass chose to take him out of the leadership position. He's been stand-up about the whole situation and played great for the Stars, as if he'd do anything else. But this has been hard on him, emotionally, I hear. I am glad he was able to accept the change and move on.

Is there another instance where a Captain who remained on the team has been demoted like this? I really don't know, anybody?

I think the reality is that you don't go to the papers to ***** about how little talent your boss brings in, and you sure as hell don't do it the year after a lock-out, and during contract negotiations where you are trying to get as much money as possible. He may be a great guy, but that showed a real lack of tact and grace. What did he expect?

I forget the reason why they took it away from him but I can see that it did not affect his game at all. Look at him, he's still producing and scored number 500 a few games ago. I give props to him for taking it with such class.

Brett Hull, though that was mainly because of the battles with Keenan, if I remember correctly.

And Vincent Lecavalier. I think that was more he was young and they figured it was too much pressure.

thanks, Harold. Mikey Mo's in some pretty good company, in terms of other ex-Cs, I guess.

Modano was also distracted by some financial decisions that went bad...and he lost alot of money. I think the story goes that he trusted a close friend to manage his investments and was let down, but Idon't remember exactly. Regardless, while Modano IS the Stars' icon ( I live in Dallas when Im not in school) its no secret that he had his worst years in Dallas as the captain. He was awful in 03-04, totaling only 44 points while posting a -21, unheard of for someone who became incredibly responsible defensively under Hitchcock. (his 02-03 numbers: 85 points +34). Pretty big drop. He rebounded well last year, but many think Dallas' poor playoff performances the past two years stems from their noticeable lack of passion (and Marty Turco), and the management thought giving Morrow the C would help that. At least that's what I think.
