Ansar Khan elaborates:

Datsyuk, Wings close on contract extension

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/stories/inde....xml&coll=1

Are the Detroit Red Wings closing in on a contract extension with star forward Pavel Datsyuk?

Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, believes they are.

"I believe it's very close," Greenstin said on Thursday...

____________

If the contract is comparable to that of Marc Savard (I've heard rumors/reports as to him being the "comparable player") I could live with it. I have my doubts this will actually get done, but it might be prudent to do so before the playoffs start. It's a gamble: Datsyuk is a no-show again you're locked into a contract probably for more than you'd want to play for a perennial playoff no-show... If he breaks out, you may have saved yourself quite a few dollars if he were to test the market this summer.

Agreed, Matt.

I honestly wanted them to wait till after the playoffs to make a decision depending on how he does. I know he's an excellent player, we are all aware of that, but playoffs are what matters most. Having a great season year in and out is great, but it's not what matters in the end.

Either way I'll be happy because he's a huge asset on our team.

I wonder what Hullie has to say for himself?!

I hope they get it wrapped up before the playoffs. If he doesn't perform then i think that we would be to move him in the summer, which i would rather not see, or use him at next years trade deadline.

I do think that he is going to have a great playoff this year.

If the Wings are "very close" to locking Dats up, and they get it done before the playoffs start, he'll be the most analyzed Wing starting April 11th.

If they do sign him before the playoffs, here's hoping he actually explodes, and the Wings have saved themselves some cash for next season.

Dats is a UFA after this season. The Wings organization would have nothing to do with "moving" Dats. If anyone was moving him, it would be his agent carrying his bags, with no strings attached to the Wings.

You guys are funy, you want to have it cheap and good but as you know in real life if you want quality you should pay good money. I realy HOPE he will be heading to Washington this team is ready to pay him 7ml and more.

If you will check the last part of the season you will see he setup or had the game winning goal like in 40% of the games, if not for his contribution where will be the team right now ?? 7th may be 8th place.

are you kiding me.

Yeah, if its one thing the Wings have been for the past 15 years, its a one-man team. :nonono:

Get a clue.

7mill or more?? You sure about that??

Datsyuk is good, but no where near worth 7mill. Even if he performs in the playoffs.

Care to define "kiding me". I'll assume you meant kidding -- and no. I didn't come up with the Savard comparison, but looking at it he WOULD be considered a comparable player in terms of production.

Savard is 1 year older than Datsyuk (29/28).

Stats this season: Savard 22-72-94 (81 games), Datsyuk 27-60-87 (78 games). PTS/G: Datsyuk is 1.12, Savard 1.16.

Both are playmakers on the ice. The biggest discrepency is two-way capability, even when ruling out the quality of the teams each player plays on. Datsyuk is near the league-lead at +37 while Savard is saddled with a -19. Savard plays a more "fiesty" game and is approaching the 100PIM mark for the 2nd-straight season.

Over the past three seasons, Savard has amassed 69 goals, 174 assists for 243 points in 209 games. (PT/G Avg: 1.16)

Datsyuk, over the same span, has totalled 85 goals, 157 assists for 242 points in 228 games. (PT/G Avg: 1.07)

So, who's kidding who here?

I've been saying it for 2 years now, he needed better linemates! Bert is what I am talking about. Just to have him on the team is huge.

I am also hesitant about Datsyuk's playoff performance, but recently I have been hearing more details about just how bad he was injured last year during the playoffs. It really sounds like he was a warrior just to get out there. A lot of us here thought that it wasn't that bad, but Zetterberg has made some comments to the effect that his injury this year is nowhere near as bad as Dats was last year. Changes my opinion a bit.
