Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted May 11, 2007 Why is it that you have to be 20yrs old to play in the AHL yet you can play in the NHL at 17 if your good enough. Just been puzzeling me for ages, GR could have a good side next year if this wasn't so as we have some great young prospects who could really benefit from playing a couple years there instead of in the WHL/OHL leagues. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 13, 2007 Junior clubs hold the player's rights until the age of 20, but NHL teams are allowed to draft at 18, and if the player is good enough, he can make the roster. [/font] If the player is not good enough to play NHL, he must be returned to his junior club. It protects against teams stockpiling young talent in the AHL and depleting the junior leagues. Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted May 13, 2007 Thanks for that mate, maybe Mursak could be a dark horse at the 07-08 camp.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted May 16, 2007 Basically it's so the Junior teams don't lose too many players. There are always some NHL-drafted players who aren't truly ready for the NHL at 18 or even 19 and see fourth-line duty or press box time, but dominate their junior leagues when they are returned there. It might hurt those few guys a little bit, but the rule is for the greater good of the game.
