WCF Game 2 (5/13): Ducks 4, Red Wings 3 OT

Despite Refs giving the Ducks a goal, we should have won tonight. We proved their goalie isn't a match without his oversized pads... We beat him so many times tonight.

-Holmstrom open net, didn't finish

-Zetterberg open net, didn't finish

-Dats OT chance.

It's obvious Detroit is the more hungry and talented team. And we have more heart and will to win. The Ducks aren't what I thought they'd be, thought they'd bring it more than the Sharks. Without the Refs help, this team is nothing.

Expect to see Detroit blasting them at the pond... we'll wear this team down and get inside their heads and take this series. Mark my words! The Ducks are not a SCF team, we are!

Go Wings!!!

anybody know if a plywood door can be fixed if "someone" were to hypothetically punch a hole in it, or does it have to be replaced?
Well I have a friend who did that once and he patched it and then painted it...

Here's what sucks about the BS 3rd Anaheim goal. The following players had great games, but nothing is being said about it:

Lids

Z

Lang

Maltby

Yes Robert Lang, the whipping boy of LGW put together a strong effort. He especially excelled on the PP with some precision passing. You all saw his great assist to Dats, but he also made a couple great passes on the last PP that didn't get put in, but could have.

Lidstrom and Zetterberg played exceptional tonight. Zetterberg was by far our best forward in the defensive zone, he won a lot of individual battles there. Lids, played like....well Lidstrom. He was our overall best player.

Finally, I thought Malby's goal turned the momentum of the game in our favor. Even though Anaheim got another goal shortly after that, we seemed to play a lot better.

On the other side, I thought Draper, Cleary, and Lilja had poor games.

yeah, but i'd wait until the end of the playoffs to fix it because you never know what other kinds of accidental holes and just general knuckle-shaped damage a door is going to accrue during a run for the cup. :P

Tough night for Detroit fans. The Wings, Pistons, and Tigers all lost. Oh well.

Despite Anahiem's 3rd goal, this series should be tied. It would have been a stretch if we could take them both. Just as long as we win one game in Anaheim, we'll be ok.

Bah who cares about those guys. Scott Niedermayer soon to be second time in a row Norris runner-up was on the ice too and he's the best player in professional sports along with Pronger. Engblom told me so!

Tough night for Detroit fans. The Wings, Pistons, and Tigers all lost. Oh well.

Thankfully the Lions season hasn't started yet.

i feel like such s*** right, im so hoping its not Edmonton all over

We are scoring goals and have good goaltending. That in itself means it cant be Edmonton all over again.

Man, being at this game tonight was nuckin futs. The fans were crazy...I have no voice. It was pretty brutal to have two goal reviews and have BOTH of them be called goals. How often does that happen?? Being in the arena, its hard to figure out why the 1) the whistle was apparently not working and 2) there was no penalty on the play for goaltender interference.

Oh well, I thought the Wings played AWESOME after that 1st period and that abysmal penalty.

These teams are very evenly matched, but I think Detroit still has the slight edge. I have yet to be impressed with Giguere, Anaheims PP, or Chris Pronger.

I know the game's done but I'm talking about how it's weird how the review system is inconsistent. I guess if it's a Canadian team it goes their way if it's a team full of Canadian golden boys it goes their way too...

Please tell me your kidding :sly:

Glad you had a great time. Wish the outcome would of been different for you!

Anyways, I agree on pretty much everything you said.

I was pissed obviously that we lost, but can't win 'em all and quite honestly the Ducks don't scare me in the least. The Wings are VERY capable of putting this team away, and I have all the faith in the world that they will.

I WAS AT THE GAME TONIGHT!!!! LOWER BOWL ROW 16 SECTION 100 RIGHT BEHIND HASEK IN THE FIRST AND THIRD.

what a game. plain and simple exciting hockey. things didn't go our way but what a great game to watch.

(oh and my aunt got the tickets free from her company when a corporate guy dumped them to take his mom out for mothers days 230 a peice face value and we had 4 of em. just awesome.)

i see a lot of people bitching about ducks goal #3, that one actually looked legit on the big screen (but i couldn;t see if he was pushed from the angles they showed). the one that shouldn't have counted IMO was ducks goal #2. they showed 3 angels and none of them looked difinitive to me. yeah the puck looked as though it went it but could you say with 100% certainty? no way.

oh well. and if dom didn't put up a wal when the ducks fired on all cylinders in the first the game wouldn't have been close. he played really well IMO.

well get them in anaheim. im preety confident (not cocky though) of that fact.

That's great about the seats. My Dad use to get 4 tickets for free too *from his friend that gets it from his company* and then we'd have VIP parking too. Ahhh we got them last year in the playoffs. No such luck this year. Just when we make it far eh. lol

Anywho, they showed the 2nd goal a bunch of times on TV and the puck was clearly in. At first it looked like Dom had it under his pad, but it did slide under him and was definitely over the line. It didn't look like it though because the water bottle was kinda covering it up in some of the replays. LOL good 'ol water bottle trying to save Dom. The third goal, however, shouldn't have counted. He was pushed, and if not for that the puck wouldn't have crossed the line. That's just bad luck I guess. :(

You're right though. We'll get 'em in Anaheim!

What a bulls*** tying goal. Absolute bulls***. No whistle, no call for goalie interference. How infuriating.

And now I'm putting it past me. They split, so we need to do the same.

I won't be satisfied with anything less than the two at Arrowhead. I want both.

And actually, that's a super big fat lie. Right now though, I feel it.

I incurred more heart attacks in this game as opposed to game 1. You guys were DESTROYING us on penalty kill. It really seemed that everytime you were shorthanded, it was an advantage for you. I'm glad we hung in there, and Scottie had a great OT goal. I did love Lidstrom's goal though, how he waited patiently for the shot, saw his opening, and fired away.

Once again, Hasek was great, and we better think of more ways to disrupt his play, as I'm pretty sure we can't rely on reviewed goals for the rest of the series.

LOL I'm sure both fans of both teams have had so many heart attacks. These games have been absolutely nerve wrecking! Yet really exciting as well. It's going to be a fantastic series.

Anyways, you're a classy one. Most definitely the best Anaheim fan on here. Thanks for telling it like it is and just being cool.

Oh well. It's all about luck in the playoffs. Wings got lucky in Game 1, Ducks got lucky in Game 2. If anything, this'll make the Wings (Hasek especially) want to come back in Game 3 and play that much better.

Yeah next game will be 1-0 or 2-1 OT.

It was interesting to see both goalies lose their game streaks of allowing 2 goals or less, both in the same night.

Some observations about game #2:

The Ducks have outplayed us for the most part in both games. If not for Hasek in game 1 we'd be down 0-2 going to Anaheim. But that 3rd goal, Hasek should have made a better stop but it didn't help that Neidermayer pushed him in with the stick. Speaking of which, the Ducks get away with so much contact on Hasek. They bump him and smack him whenver they get the chance and there's no calls. Minnesota and Vancouver both complained about this and yet nothing's done. If anyone is familiar with my rantings in the past it's that I'm one of the guys that routinely sticks up for the refs and I hate using officiating as an excuse for anything. And let me say this for the record that officiating wasn't our downfall of last nights loss. But saying that I have a few complaints. How is it that Lilja gets called for barely touching Selanne after a clean hit and gets a minor while Scott Neidermayer hits Datsyuk and then brushes his teeth with his elbow on the follow through without one? Or how is it that in every other series (not involving the Ducks), if you breath on the goalie you get a call and yet Anaheim is allowed to do whatever they want to the opposing goalie? Todd Marchant clearly made contact on Hasek, on purpose, in the 3rd with no call. MacDonald gets shoved into Hasek in Game 1 and then gives him 2 swats with no call. Corry Perry basically doesn't attempt to stop once he crosses the blueline and uses the goalie to stop any forward progress he makes - again, never any calls.

And what about Lebda on that breakaway? That's a penalty shot in every other game. He was clearly behind Pronger and he got hauled down. That is textbook penalty shot material. Maybe not 3 years ago, but since then, they've adjusted the rules and that should have been one.

However, in the end, the Ducks have shown more jump and are taking it to us. They are killing us downlow with their size and speed and our depleted, battered defense corps are getting worn out. I'm still proud of our Wings for how they're giving it their all but I think the gas tank might be empty. The Ducks are playing very well and Giggy's pads are making good stops so we should give credit where it's due.

Speaking Stay Puft boy, did anyone else catch what Hrudey had to say about him? He said that Giggy has no athletisim but gets by on his size and sound positioning. I loved it. You could tell he was trying to be polite but he kept reiterating how 'big' Giggy is. And lets not confuse this with "Well, Giggy's a big dude". No he's not. He's average. Brodeur is a bigger man than him by 10 lbs and yet he looks 25 lbs lighter than him with equipment on.

I still remember when the Ducks went to the finals in '03 and many people said "Where did this guy come from". Then the stories started to come out how the Ducks goaltending coach basically told him "you have no reflexes so we need to take advantages of your oversized pads and make you better positionally". That's all he is, pads and angles. But you have to give him credit. He's playing within the rules and he's getting the job done. Of course, if he was any team that didn't sport the kind of defense that Anaheim has he'd have a GAA that's bigger than his chest protector.

Sour grapes? Absolutely I have them. But I don't think I'm saying anything that isn't true. The guy's not a good goalie. But he's been able to be successful using artificial means within a great hockey system that works to his advantage.

All in all, game 2 was a good game to watch. The Ducks deserved the W. I just hope the Wings can keep working hard and hopefully gain a split in Anaheim.

P.S. I still think it's horsecrap that both Anaheim and Detroit have to play a team on opposite ends of the country. I wish the NHL would rotate 1 Eastern Conference division in the West every year. Make teams like NJ and Buffalo and Philly play in the West every 4 years and see how they like this crap.

As opposed to everyones, "the Red wings played like crap", I disagree with you. I'm very happy with the way the played. The wings showed us they have the ability to beat the speed and tenacity of the Ducks. I think we will gain 2 in anaheim, and in 5 will be over. After the first game, I was sweating bullets about the rest of the series. Now, even when we lost, there is no despair. We played great. Keep up that second/third period play, and we have this series. the ducks cant stop us now, we know how they play. Just like calgary and SJ, we are onto you now, Mr. Dukkies. See you in anaheim.
