am I the only one who thinsk that Kronwall is overpaid? Not only does he make 3 million but actually makes more than Zetterburg. I find this completely nuts.

When you compare Kronwalls 3 million to Schneider's possible demand...suddenly any Schneider $ amount looks reasonable

2 Reasons:

Smyth = More Money/Less risk

Bertuzzi - Less Money/More Risk

(Bart Simpson Voice) You're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't...

Kronwall's salary is a risky situation. He is paid on potential and skill that he has not proved he will/can attain. On one hand, if he reaches his full potential next season, stays healthy all year, and plays up to the level he has been expected, it doesn't seem like such a bad deal and Kenny H looks like a genius. Then again, if he has another injury-plagued season or plays flat-out average, Holland & Co. look like they've been spending too much time with Miss Mary Jane...

I don't doubt that they'll have the room for Smyth if the cap does in fact go up to $51 million. What I don't think would be smart, however, would be to sign a high priced forward to a long term contract, with Zetterberg due for a $5 million raise in 2 years. You'd have waaaay too much of the cap tied up Datsyuk, Z, Smyth/Drury, and Lidstrom if he's still around. Plus that would leave no money to go get a goalie if Howard flops.

I like Smyth. Really, I do. But his game is so similar to Holmstrom, he'd be a luxury, not a necessity. And for twice the price of Homer, I don't like him all that much. If they want to sign a high priced forward, I'd rather it be on a guy like Drury.

I think it's hysterical that Kronwall is the 3rd highest paid player on the team right now. And by the time free agency is over, he's still in the top 6.

Jim Matheson, The Edmonton Journal

Published: Wednesday, June 27, 2007

....What about former Edmonton Oilers winger turned New York Islander Ryan Smyth? Where's he going? The Calgary Flames might take a run at him, but GM Darryl Sutter, who has long been a Smyth fan, would have to move Alex Tanguay's $5.25 million's salary to secure him. Dealing Tanguay, let's say to the Montreal Canadiens, wouldn't be that difficult.

But would Smyth really want to play for a Western Conference team in the same division that he has battled against for 10 years? A team that plays the Oilers eight times a season? That's a concern for Smyth, even signing in Colorado where he's friends with Avalanche captain Joe Sakic.

The Detroit Red Wings, with $31.1 million committed in salary for next year, still seems the best bet to sign Smyth.

But they might not give him six years. The Wings have some serious money juggling to work through, however, before they can consider Smyth.

"What has transpired in the marketplace so far ... free agents have set their expectations for money," said Wings GM Ken Holland. "I can't blame the players trying to get what they can, but we'll have to make some hard decisions this week.

"I've got to get Dom (Hasek) back. I'd like to have Todd Bertuzzi back, Matt (Mathieu Schneider) certainly and Danny Markov played well for us, but we don't have that kind of (money) depth." The Wings probably hope Schneider, who's very comfortable in Detroit, comes back for a hometown discount rather than opt for the market.

But if Holland and company want to go after Smyth, they'll have to say goodbye to Bertuzzi, even if they likely are only willing to offer him about $2.5 million on a one-year deal. They've already cut their ties to centre Robert Lang and his $3.8-million contract.

"We want to build around Pavel Datsyuk ($6.7 million) and we have Nick Lidstrom ($7.6 million). We can afford another (high-end) player or two, then you have to have team players," Holland said.

p.s. Steve Yzerman and Ryan Smyth good buddies from being teammates on Team Canada.

If we can actually sign both Schneids AND Smyth, obviously we have to act on it. But Im not so sure we can. The vibe I've been getting from Kenny is that the budget is slimmer than we all think.

the Kronwall deal may have been jumping the gun a little bit, but he's played well when he's been healthy and hopefully his run of bad luck with injuries is over.

personally, I'll take Ryan Smyth over Todd Bertuzzi any day, but the money just might not be there...it'd be good to sign Bert for a discount for 1 year to see what he can do...like someone said earlier, Bertuzzi is more risk/less money while Smyth is more money/less risk...Kenny has some interesting decisions to make in the next few days.

Maybe he's intentionaly giving off this vibe as a negotiating tactic to get his UFAs to sign for less.

dammit i hate this situation. I want to see schneids back, but then we need physical forwards, but then we're losing a great scoring defenseman... decisions decisions.

Exactly....Kenny has some hard calls to make

Either way this year is going to be great!

Unless Smyth wants to sign a two year contract (probably unlikely), I say forget him. With Z's contract up in two years, IMO there's no one that will be available in the league that should compromise his re-signing with the Wings. If you strap the team for a few players (same as Tampa Bay) you just end up screwing yourself by not being able to suit up a "complete" squad.

Forget Smyth, bring back Schneider and Bert, and sign another solid $3 million forward to round out the offense.

Another option might be to front load Smyth's contract so the cap hit decreases in two years when it's time to sign Henrik. This is possible, correct?

The cap number is just the total contract amount divided by the years of the contract (the average salary per year), so no, you can't do that. Good try though.

QFT. Smyth would be a total misfit on this squad right now. Homer does the crease crashing/deflecting as well as or better than Smyth and bert does some of that too, plus he'd cost too much. I Khan't imagine what he's thinking...

Bertuzzi is = a Ryan Smyth? I'd love to hear THAT argument.
