i dont see how illitch isnt in there, i mean both his teams won their confrence and went far last year.....or how steve yzerman gordie howe or even wayne gretzky arent there pfff f*** espn

What does ESPN have to do with this article?

Howe, Yzerman and Gretzky aren't as a big of a household name to the causal sports fan anymore.

Wings did not win the western conference, the ducks did. Tigers didn't even win the divison. Illitch doesn't deserve to be in the top 100. Maybe top 200, but not 100.

Read the fluff language, Wikipedia calls these weasel words, as it builds up this oh-so-important poll.

To ensure that we brought a full range of expertise to bear, we combined this publication's business insights with the encyclopedic sports knowledge of the writers and editors at ESPN The Magazine. Some of the stories, including this essay, were collaborations between ESPN and BusinessWeek writers.

Why shouldnt ESPN get involved? They are the sports leading tv channel, whether or not the NHL is involved. NHL has run their league to the ground and thats why they are not high on the list. Sidney Crosby is on the list as he should be. He IS the face of the league.

"NBA Commissioner David Stern scheming to make basketball the dominant global sport instead of soccer."

There in the opening paragraph of the article it states that soccer is the global sport... and yet, in a list of the most powerful people in sports, nothing soccer related in the top 15..... Lol... That's absolute stupidity and poor journalism. It's almost as bad as calling whatever team wins the NBA title the World champs despite the fact that the only other country represented in the NBA is Canada. Ah the egocentric world of American sports. That's why nobody watches Hockey, not enough Americans play it.

I agree that ESPN doesn't give the sport I love much credit, but when you are running a business, you run it to make profit and hockey doesn't do that well for them I guess....but they are partly to blame for that one.

Do you really see Illitch as all that influential? He doesn't pay much attention to the baseball team as he does to his NHL team. To be honest, if I wasn't a Wings fan, I bet I wouldn't hear much about this guy at all.

Howe - does he even have much influence in the hockey world...let alone the sports world anymore?

Yzerman - still has some influence in the hockey world, but pretty insignificant in the sports world in general.

Gretzky - maybe 10 years ago, still influential, but not enough to make a list of the most influential.
