Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 Alright, well before I start, let me say that many of you may agree with me but most of you probably wont. Now with that in mind allow me to start. So who has been terrible for years….. I think we are all in agreement that the Flyers have been just awful these last few years (unless you count the games that the wings play them, in which case they become a very tough team haha). But anyways, they have had a terrible record lately. But I think that this is the year they turn it around. Now I have been thinking this for a long time now, but watching the first period of tonight’s game has kind of added to the fire. No other team went out this offeason and upgraded better than I believe the flyers did. They got a great goal scorere with Briere and they put him on a line with Gagne who is just lethal. Mike Knuble adds leadership to that line and its just devastating so far. They are looking strong. They have also added leadership in the acquisition of Jason smith, a solid player who is recently named captain. The only weakness I see so far is a goaltender. And when I say weakness I mean “could be better†Martin Biron is a fine good goaltender, but the Flyers haven’t had the best defense in the last few years, which has made any goalie the have had llok like dan cloutier out there. I think if Biron gets a little help from his defense (which with the acquisitions of smith and Timonen and the departure of Pitkanen, might be possible) he might have a solid season. Don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not saying they are going to win the cup right now, but I don’t see them finishing last in the league this year, which is a huge improvement, and who knows, the playoffs may even be in their future. What do you guys think?

Timonen and Smith will really help their D. And another year under the belts of their youngsters should help as well. I picked Biron and Timonen in my fantasy pool. I hope it works out.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 The Flyers are actually my pick to win the East in a remarkable turnaround. This team had an awful record last year, but this wasnt your typical bad team, as they had a good amount of talent but horribly underachieved. With the moves they made this offseason, to me this team is loaded. They added a great character guy, as well as very solid defenseman in Jason Smith, and I think Biron will finally give them something in net. And when push comes to shove, theyre capable of icing the toughest lineup in the league...so you know that gets a big from me!
Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted October 5, 2007 (edited) Duds. At best they'll lose in the first round of the playoffs. How would that make them duds??? You yourself just said they would make the playoffs. Which to a team that was down there with the worst in the NHL, would be a succesful season. They're not excpecting to be a Stanley Cup contender overnight. But just making the playoffs would be HUGE for this squad. And I agree that they will make the post-season. And when you make the post-season, ANYTHING can happen. Hell, they just might be on a hot streak at the time. Ala the 05-06 Edmonton Oilers. So to sum up, the Flyers will absolutely NOT be duds. And Even if they get ousted in the first round. That's a GIANT step forward for a former bottom of the barrell team. The Flyers are actually my pick to win the East in a remarkable turnaround. But no way in hell they go to the Stanley Cup Finals. No way this team could win a 7 game series against the Senators. Well that's my opinion anyway. Izzy24 44 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 How does that not make them Studs based off of last years Flyers? They'll be better than last year, I wouldn't say that makes them studs. I don't think simply making the playoffs makes them studs. In the NHL >50% of the teams make the playoffs, it's not that big of an accomplishment.
Guest DetroitIan Report post Posted October 5, 2007 They'll be better than last year, I wouldn't say that makes them studs. Like I said, most people arent saying they will be dominant Cup contenders. So they might not necassarily be "studs." But it sure the hell doesnt make the "duds." I don't think simply making the playoffs makes them studs. In the NHL >50% of the teams make the playoffs, it's not that big of an accomplishment. Dude, what the hell are you smoking??? Must be some good s***. Cause if you're gonna say it's not that big of a deal for a team to make the playoffs after being one of the worst teams in the league just a season ago, you're either completely ignorant, or you are smoking some damn fine herb. Just as you said, 50% of the teams make the playoffs, which mean 50% of all the teams DON'T make the playoffs. So to be one of the worst teams in the NHL in '06. To now, being a playoff team in '07, and have atleast a SHOT at the Cup, is completely a BIG DEAL. Put the pipe down bro.

I said "greater than 50% of all teams make the playoffs," which means that less than 50% do not make the playoffs. Thus, making the playoffs is more common than not. That hardly makes them "studs." Turkey 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2007 somewhere in between. Someone has just put their finger on the inherent weakness in bivalent reasoning. Nothing comes down to either/or. That said, if the Flyers make the playoffs it will be a tremendous accomplishment for them. It's an accomplishment for any team that hasn't made them recently to make them. I think some of us who love the Wings may be a little spoiled due to the fact that our boys are always in the Cup hunt. Making the playoffs and loosing in the first round may be disappointing (as Atlanta) but it doesn't make you a "dud".
