Paul Woods' opinions

Anybody listen to the post-game show on WXYT last night? He had some really good opinions about the NHL on Versus, OLN as he called it, and the new rule changes.

He said Versus does a great job with the NHL. That Versus is totally dedicated to the NHL, something that ESPN couldn't be. That if the NHL was on ESPN that games would be bumped in favor of NFL, MLB, and NBA games. He also wishes ESPN would highlight NHL games on Sportscenter instead of regulating them toward the end of the show.

As far as the new rule changes, post lockout, he said they're great. He said right now is the best hockey he's seen since he's covered the NHL for the last twenty years. He said pre-lockout there was no flow and more clutching and grabbing.

Woods said some other great things last night too. I wish I had recorded what all he said, because IMO he was spot on with everything he said.

Yes VS does do a great job of putting NHL first...... but thats because thats all they have unless you count fishing. ESPN would bring hockey back into the everyday sports fan's home. plus i miss NHL tonight on ESPN.

You need to take a closer look at Versus' programing.

Paul Woods and Ken Kal are the best. I love listening to them at work when I can't catch the game. They always have spot on analysis, and Paul Woods is usually pretty funney when morons call in.

Ok sorry they also have very little football too, oh and don't forget hunting and some bike riding.

The point was if you want people to watch hockey hiding it on some crap cable network that know one even knows about or gets wont help.

I agree with all of this. I know that VS doesn't get the exposure but you can't argue that VS treats the NHL far better than ESPN did. But I think this horse has already been beaten far after it's death.

Regarding the game itself I agree that it's a LOT better than it was a few years ago.

My only wish would be that more teams would try to open things up. After 51 games this season 43% of them had one team, or both, score 1 goal or less. And 13% of them have ended with a shutout while GPG is down to 5.25.

It's only 2 weeks, I know, but Bob McKenzie said on TSN's preview show that he felt, judging by last years playoffs, that defense would be trumpeted even more and we'd be seeing a lot more 2-1, 1-0 and 3-1 games this season and so far he's right.

I'm just so tired of how sterile the league has become. Nobody's allowed to try anything special or take a risk to create offense. Everything from face-offs to neutral zone coverage is videotaped and analyzed to death. It's like the players are all robots, with only a select few being better at shooting or passing. But everyone back-checks with authority and blocks shots with abandon.

I know that some think "scoring chances are just as exciting as goals" but I don't agree with that one iota. Goals get me excited and get me out of my seat.

Oh well, I guess I have to let the brand of hockey I witnessed in the 80's pass by. It's not just that the players are stronger and faster, it has more to do with the style of hockey being played. Coaches are trying to keep their jobs and get their teams in the playoffs so the owners can get that nice fat playoff revenue. And it's been proven time and time again that defense wins games a lot more than offense.

Paul Woods is an ******* and a true idiot... I know this because I had him as a hockey coach. I do agree with his points on VS though....

LOL! Are you serious? He sounds like a cool guy on the radio.

yea im serious... the guy is a total douchebag...

Hahaha! Can you give us some funny stories from when he was your coach?

I just recently read a post on HF where Tony Amonte was coachign a 9 year old team in a Vegas hockey tourny. Apparently his team was overly rough and aggressive but when the opposing coach called him on it, Amonte responded "Welcome to the real world a**hole!". Nice.
