Cripes! more than half of NBA refs gamble!

What a shocker! I still say to this day that the Miami-Detroit series 2 years ago was rigged by Stern. Who wants to see the "boring" Pistons play when you can have Wade, and Shaq? Wade got away with murder in the Detroit series. I stopped watching the NBA about 3 years ago, and won't watch again. I only watch the Pistons.

Jimminy Christmas!

A. I wonder how many NHL refs bet

B. How is this sport still popular?

C. I bet this doesn't do anything negative to the NBA, if it had been the NHL it'd have been lights out.

C: It shouldn't do anything negative to the NBA. Who cares??? "Gambling" in this case includes things like buying lottery tickets and playing poker at the yearly refs' convention. No need to overreact. Stern is doing the right thing by rewriting the rules - a referee going into a casino to blow 100 bucks playing blackjack should not be a big deal. The rules are now going to be more enforceable and more realistic.

um not when refs in your sport have been accused of fixing games, then it's not even close to innocent.

You have to separate the two. That's like saying there's a ref that was convicted of child molestation, so no referee may do volunteer work with kids or go to a school. Playing poker with your buddies and fixing games for the mob are so far apart on the right-and-wrong spectrum it's absurd to see a link between the two.

Again you're seeing so big a picture you're not seeing the finer points.

It's bad for the league period.

Recently an NBA referee was nailed for point shaving.

Recently a star NBA player has complained that league was fixed

granted your example works,..but throw in a rumor that a large majority of NBA refs are child molsters and suddenly it's not so far apart now is it?

'Sheed complaining that the NBA is fixed does not exactly carry the same weight as Tim Duncan saying the same thing. Or even Chauncey Billups saying the same thing. 'Sheed is not exactly what you'd call a credible witness, being that he and the refs have a pretty obvious vendetta against each other. And the only reason there's a "rumor" that other refs might also be fixing games is because people are simply wondering whether Donaghy was alone. No evidence behind it, just people thinking out loud.

This isn't really a big deal or a big shock at all. These guys are just betting in Casinos, and only one ref in the league was found to have been betting on sports. The NBA sucks, and officiating plays a part there, but it's because of inconsistency more than refs fixing games. The only reason the one guy was able to tamper with the outcomes of games so easily is that refs are allowed to call games so completely different from each other. Nobody noticed.
