Well he was drafted in the summer of 1998 but we all know he wasn't brought over until the 2001-02 season.

If my memory serves me correcty he was still playing with Dynamo Yekaterinburg of the RSL for the 1998-99 season and I remember reading about him having a pretty solid year.

2001 was his rookie season in the NHL, he played in Russia before that.

Before moving to North America, Pavel played for Ak Bars Kazan and Yekaterinburg in the Superleague. He also followed Yekaterinburg to the first division (1998-99) and played for their second team (1998-99 and 1996-97).

Nevermind the stats just weren't on hockeydb for some reason for 1998.

Datsyuk scored 27 points in 22 games in 98-99, so why did he only play 15 games the next season?

I believe it was just a matter of him growing enough. This is From http://www.behindthejersey.com/2004/01/26/...-jersey-no-13/: "Pavel had very good skills, but was very small and weak. When we drafted him he was 5′8″ and about 145 pounds soaking wet."

I'm sure it was when he was done growing when he finally started to dominate.

Yeah, I think that's pretty much the deal. When he was drafted, the Wings liked his skill but honestly were probalby not entirely hopeful that he would ever play in the league due to his size at the time. This is one of the reasons he was taken so late in the draft.

I never knew that. It doesn't make his selection all that more of a steal, considering the absolute lack of size he had, but it is an interesting fact.

Here is an old article about the twins that talks a bit about drafting both - pretty interesting. Man, I just love having Pavel and Hank. They are truly awesome and now little Hudler is starting to come out. Life is good.

I found this site a couple of weeks ago and It does mention him missing time because of a leg injury. It also tells a little about his family and early carrer in Russia that I had never heard before.
