Self-fulfilling prophecy

Did anybody listen to Jim Rome's show yesterday? He had John Ondrasik of Five for Fighting fame on the show. Obviously he's a big hockey fan. Anyway he said all the complaining about marketing of the game and off ice problems is a self-fulfilling prophecy. I just caught the tail end of his segment on the Rome show so I didn't listen to his whole interview, but I think he might be right. It's weird I was just thinking this yesterday morning too, when I posted the why fix it thread. I don't hear or read about all the off field problems of baseball or American football, or the off-court problems of basketball. I guess that could be because I'm not on American football, baseball or basketball message boards. Even in the media there is a lot of off ice topics about hockey. Focus on the game. The NHL isn't perfect, but I think overall the game is fine. I'd still rather watch or attend a hockey game before any other sport.

Are you saying that the other sports don't have off-ice problems like hockey? You'd be right in the sense that they're waaay worse. Kobe raping a chick, Sean Taylor getting killed, half the Bengals being arrested, the list goes on.

I meant articles like this one just posted yesterday.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/stor...&id=3139460

It's not just ESPN, it's just about everybody and anybody who covers hockey. There's a ton of stories about how to fix the game, make it better, what's wrong, new sweaters, etc. The NHL brings it on itself sometimes because it's constantly tinkering, when it could be left alone. The League also brings it on itself because League officials continue to talk about it.

Jim Rome is a jackass, but you have to give him credit for putting Teemu on the show before the Ducks playoff run.

I couldn't post a topic but hopefully this can garner some responses.

Anyone living in or around the Detroit area as Wings fans...

I'd like to ask for opinions/stories/reasons for the poor attendance at the Joe.

I understand there have been stories and articles written about the topic, however I'd like direct opinions and quotations from fans themselves, as this is the basis of an essay for one of my classes at Temple University.

Search the forums. There were a couple long debates about it.

I don't hear or read about all the off field problems of baseball or American football, or the off-court problems of basketball.

Each of those leagues has 10 times the off-court drama as the NHL. Just look at the NFL this year: Packman Jones, Vick!!!!!, Ricky WIlliams (drugs, comeback, injured), Sean Taylor, ect ect... Then there's the NBA: Ref scandles, Artest beating a woman, Kobe... MLB: Do I need to even go beyond Barry Bonds?

The problem is that the only time the NHL does something news worthy it is negative (or it's a behind the head ovechkin goal). Well, in all honestly, people like to watch players they hate in the hopes that they'll see said player crash and burn... contovery polarizes people, therefore making them more likely to pick sides, thereby causing them to invest in one of these sides and actually pay attention to it. If anything Hockey needs more colorful characters to draw attention to the sport (alas, if only we could cross breed Crosby and Avery...it'd also be nice is Burtuzzi didn't suck now).

Granholm is a TOOL!

Auto Industry no longer centralized in Detroit

Granholm is a TOOL!

many people without jobs

Granholm is a TOOL!

The list keeps going on :)

I don't mind the attendance "issues" at all.. There are no problems... if there was Mr. Moneybags WOULD be foreced to lower tickets across the boards.... No reduction in price... everything is peachy keen. The problem is media made Bulls*** to get a rise out of people <-- You can quote that for your paper directly... OsGOD says so!

I thought I corrected myself about that.

I mean the tinkering of the game, scheduling problems, equipment problems, etc. I don't hear about those kind of problems in other leagues. That could be because I'm not as big of a fan of those sports.

Eh, sorry didn't see that.. You hear about it in baseball a lot in regards to the potential need for some sort of a salary cap, as well as drug testing, but that's not really in relation to how the game is played.

With the NBA, in the 2001-02 season they changed the time to get past midcourt from 10 to 8 seconds... they made the defensive 3-secnd rule.. and a few other defensive rules. This was all designed to increase the flow of the game (like the NHL is doing). Recent NBA changes have mostly been dealing with their playoff and seeding formats (from a 5 game first round to a 7... and not seeding division winners as automatic 1-2-3.) However, that shows that there is still debate within basketball, and it has been rising in global popularity.

The NFL has also changed some rules recently.. some kinds of blocking is legal now when it wasn't before, and now rushing defenders have to try and avoid low hits (or it's a penalty).. There are a bunch of other ones too.

Anyways, a good league is continually trying to find ways to improve the game. I don't think the NHL's problems are because of their efforts to better play (after all this is a fairly recent trend and hockey has been going downhill in popularity for a while).

Yeah see, I didn't know all that.

Those sports leagues' fans seem to have moved on as well as the media that cover those leagues regarding those changes.

There seems to me a lot of complaining by hockey fans about how bad the NHL is - not enough fighting, not enough scoring, attendance problems, Bettman, schedule, too many teams. I'm just as guilty, but I'm tired of it all. So I plan to minimize my posts about the bad things about the NHL.

Oh and I like Rome because he chats about hockey and interviews hockey players from time to time. Certainly more than others with national radio shows.

Even in the media there is a lot of off ice topics about hockey.

There are? I see none.

Seriously, the biggest off-ice splash the NHL made this year: That Staal kid and his buddies getting caught drinking. The NHL is full of a bunch of lightweights compared to the drama kings of every other league.

While the NHL isn't void of problems by any stretch of the imgination, neither is any other major professional sport. The game is far from perfect but it's pretty damn tiring to see people scratch and claw to complain about anything and everything with the game, sometime just for the sake of it.

The game isn't as bad as we or the media make it out to be.
