union drone 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 Am I the only one that thinks nothing of this at all? I mean, it wasn't much of a blow up at all, especially for a coach. I'd expect every coach to have the same type of reaction at least once during every game. Normally, I don't think much of this kind of stuff... but in this case it was Wayne Gretzky, the camera was directly centered on him, and judging from what I saw on the jumbo flat screen TV at the bar, he looked truly pissed off. I guess the big screen made it larger than life... Wayne =

The only reason it got some attention, is because it is Gretzky. If this were ANY other coach, nobody would think twice about it...this is quite normal. Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 (edited) Anyone ever see John Tortorella (sp) after the team gives up a goal? I've never seen him go to extremes...but he's always pouting and looks like he's thinking, "I can't believe we just got scored on." Like he expects his team to have a shutout every game. You watch, after every goal against, he's always there on the bench pouting. Edited January 2, 2008 by Hockeytown0001

He has a huge smile on his face when Vinny scores a nice goal, and he ******* up a storm when something doesn't go right.

I don't want to argue back and forth because you have the right to want any style of coach you wish, but the coach you used as an example of your point is in last place in the division and in the east. But like I said, you can prefer any coach you want, I personally want a coach that wins.

Seriously, Tampa is off to a slow start, but you can't blame that on Torts. He has been playing the last 3 seasons with minor league goaltenders. You can't blame Torts for signing Vinny, Richards, and St. Louis to those huge contracts, leaving little cash for a quality goaltender. Hell, if the Lightning had a middle of the road tender they'd be in playoff contention right now. As is they are 7 points out of 8th. Coaching styles are a preference, but you can't say Torts isn't a winning coach.
Lady in REd 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 My friends and I couldn't believe our eyes and busted out laughing at Wayne's little temper tantrum after Dats third period game winning goal. We joked that it would probably appear as a re-dubbed, re-mixed, or re-edited internet phenom in a matter of hours. Does anyone have a link to a video of "the irate one" losing his temper? I kinda feel sorry for the guy, but I can't help but laugh! Also, any thoughts about Wayne's little blow up? Enjoyable to watch yes, but I'm not holding it against him. Every coach loses their cool once in a while (well, most every at least). He has kind of put himself in a bad position though. Great player, not so great coach. union drone 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2008 In fact, this is quite tame in comparison to some other coaches. Anyone ever seen Bob Hartley? Marc Crawford? Mike Keenan? Yes, but we expect blow ups from certain coaches. If I see Keenan do what Gretzky did, I would chuckle a bit and promptly forget about it. What makes Gretzky different is that he always looks like he is trying so hard to maintain his composure... like he has an image to maintain and wants to appear cool under pressure. In the seconds leading up to his outburst, you could see his face contort in disgust as he was trying to hold back, but couldn't. Keenan or Crawford would just start yelling at the slightest provocation, without the little personal drama that played out on Gretzky's face.

Coaching styles are a preference, but you can't say Torts isn't a winning coach. Fair enough. I wasn't trying to imply that Torts wasn't someone that knew how to win. Maybe each coach knows their players better than we do. I mean if the Wings were losing and Babs just sat on the bench, and they still lost the game, I'd be pissed. However, that doesn't happen much. So I watch the game and think to myself "Hey this guy treats these players like they're pros, not some pee-wee league. Then you can watch Torts and see a coach that motivates through emotion. If they win great the emotion paid off. If they lose he looks like a person with anger issues screaming at those around him so he'll fell better as a person. Either way, I respect your opinion and abililty to put together a case based on counterpoint and not screaming the same thing over and over.
