Maltby hopes to return vs. Senators on Jan. 12th

Posted by George James Malik January 02, 2008 12:46PM

Detroit Red Wings forward Kirk Maltby believes that he'll round into "game shape" by the middle of the month:

January 2, Detroit Free Press: Kirk Maltby, out since Nov. 27 with back problems, is shooting to return in about 10 days or so.

"I'm hoping no more than two weeks, as long as I don't have any setbacks as far as my back and just get myself back in game shape," he said Wednesday morning as the Red Wings prepared to face Dallas tonight.

"I really had four, four-and-a-half weeks there were I did almost nothing cardio wise, so I feel it out there in practice," he said. "So, it's going to take a little bit to get that back, and then obviously you have to get in some games to get game-shape back."

Maltby said he's aiming for the Jan. 12 game at Ottawa.

Not to be an ass, but am I the only one that doesn't miss Maltby that much? His play on the PK is invaluable, but I'm just not a huge fan of the amount of minutes he gets. Obviously he plays great alongside Drapes due to their chemistry, but does anyone else feel he'd be better off as more of a PK specialists with slightly reduced even-strength ice time?

I totally agree with you. His role should be limited down to mostly PK

I agree. He hasn't produced much in the regular season for a few seasons. But in the playoffs I have no problem with him getting extra minutes, he always steps up and gets a few goals and is a prime-time agitator.

Guest wingswillwincup

i didnt want maltby back to begin with , let alone another 2-3 yrs ...... so im personally glad hes gone , it'll give the young kids a chance to play more , if we win the cup this season id personally like to see him traded so the kids play more , we got MORE then enough leaders on this team and guys who can kill penalties

He absolutely steps up his game in the playoffs, and you can never downplay the role of an agitator in a Best-of-7 series.

i love maltby, its true he is an agitator which means he isnt as noticed until the playoffs. him and draps are prolly the two best pk'ers we have, so why not reward them with icetime for always logging those tough minutes, id rather have maltby out there than sammy, at least he makes passes consistently

Maltby/Homers return = Drake/Kopecky back to the 4th Line

Drake On 4th Line = Cheapshots

Cheapshots = Fights

Fights = Love

Kopecky on the 4th line = Less Nothingness

Less Nothingness = More Somethingness.

:D

Honestly...I don't think he has much impact as an agitator anymore. I haven't seen him get opponents into an absolute enraged frenzy like he used. Sure, he gets his face glove washed and players chirping quite a bit....but Malts used to have the ability to work opposing players into a complete... I'm going to kill him, screw hockey rules and my career, I'll see you in the parking lot, your moma's a skank, I'll eat your children, - type loss of composure. Not anymore.

Yea poor Malts has been struggling to do much of anything other than PKing the past few years... I do agree that he is more valuable come playoff time though. But nonetheless, no rush for him to get back...

He did draw a fair share of penalties during last years playoffs due to his play. They may not have been the result of of someone going after him, but he got in their heads enough to the point where they would do something stupid to someone else, thus resulting in a Wings PP.
