Putting Z on a line with Sammy is a waste of Z's talent

Zetterberg needs better linemates to shine and show his true skill. With Samuelsson on his right wing, he stands no chance at making those incredible goal scoring plays. When Z was with Dats, dats would make great plays and Zetterberg was the guy with the skill to bury them in the net. When Sammy is on the ice, his first thought is to shoot the puck...and he scores 1/25 shots...and that's being generous. Don't get me wrong, Samuelsson is a great asset to this team. He is constantly shooting the puck, which is good, except when you're playing alongside Zetterberg. If Babcock doesn't put Sammy on the 3rd line with Draper and Maltby, which he'd fit in with better than Zetterberg, than Z's points aren't going to rack up as quickly as they would if he was playing with a different right wing.

Point is...Z and Sammy aren't good linemates

I hate to even sound like I am sticking up for Sammy, but he actually has been shooting a lot less and trying (key word, trying) to make more passes and plays. Last night near the end of the game I swear he took a shot, but seemed almost reluctant when there was simply nothing else to do. Still, I agree with you 100% that he is not the linemate for Hank. No way. You need a guy who can do it all. Cleary is by far the better choice because he is smart and drives to the net. I always stay away from line combos on this forum, but let me try a few.

Homer - Dats - Flip

Hudler - Hank - Cleary

Switching Cleary and Homer works for me too.

I have an idea for Sammy and his shot. He needs his visor to be ground so that when he thinks he is looking at the goalies chest, he is actually looking a foot or two to the side (left or right, based on stats from where he shoots most). Without something like that, I can't see how his shooting the puck will pay off more than 1 times out of 20. Might help his passing too!

P.S. Can you imagine if he or any other Wings ever read or visit this site? I would have to imagine they don't as a rule.

Sammy could be good somewhere. But not with Zetter.

He isnt a bad player, But it's similiar to the lions situation at MLB. Paris Lenon is a backup in a Starters roll. Thats the way it is with Sammuelson.

It's a lose/lose for him.

I was bashing Sammy earlier about a month ago. But, last night he hardly played on Z's line, it was Hank, Hudler and Cleary THAT WORKED WELL, and Pavs Fil Homer. I would like to see the 3 reunited and have Franzen with Sammy and Kopecky and Drake MAlts Drapes, that would be great. Babcock has been great all year with finding good combinations, I saw though that Sammy was paired with Z at some points in the game.

Exactly, Sammy shoots alot, just like Z shoots alot, it doesn't work well. Although Sammy was passing a lot more last night trying to set Z up, which didn't work because when Sammy passes it is hard for even Hank to handle.

But all in all as Wing fans we do not have anything to complain about, the D is playing great, Lebda and Kronwall and ofcourse the Pain train are all picking their games up.

And my vote for MVP this year has to go to Rafalski so far, even though I said Lidstrom or Datsyuk a few days ago, just watching Rafa play makes me feel a lot better about the playoff run. He compliments Lidstrom well, if they are paired up or not, he gives the defensive core a lot more stability.

GO WINGS (GREAT to see Homer back setting Pavs up with a beauty.

Putting Z on any line except for a line that consists of Datsyuk, Holtstrom and himself is wasting his talent, don't you think? What can you do, put him with Maltby and Kopecky? You can hate it, but Cleary, Sammy and Hudler is the best 2nd line talent we've got. Putting Sammy on the 3rd or 4th line is also a waste of Sammy's talent, so really he belongs on the 2nd line or not playing at all. And tbh, Sammy isn't terrible, the guy can play a little. And on a team that tends to be pass-happy, it's nice to have someone who likes to shoot.

you know what i'm tired of? samuelsson tapping his blade on the ice like 30 times a shift so he can finally get the pass and shoot it right into the goalie's chest.

newsflash: you're not a 70 goal scorer. stop tapping your stick on the ice like you're god damn brett hull. you'll get the pass whenever z feels like it, and you'll get the same garbage shot off regardless.

what a bender.

Last night was ridiculus and it eventually got fixed to the Dats-Homer-Flip and Zata-Huds-Cleary and worked great. Sammy is a waste of space and I'm sick of the Savardian spit followed by a blind backhand pass to nobody and he can't time or aim a shot correctly to save his life...

Yet some how some one actually in the NHL found the nerve to sign him and actually give him ice time when he could have been giving it to Hartigan, Kopecky, Ellis, Downey, Drake, jeesh the nerve of some NHL team's front office people.

Man next thing you know some one will draft a guy in 7th round and have the balls to play them like a first round choice!

Now that the sarcasm is over, I agree with your line combo's whole heartedly, your assessment of Sammy I don't but I think after the last few weeks the lines should be Cleary Dats Flip, Huds Z Homer, Maltby Draper Drake (Sammy isn't good enough d wise to play here), Kopecky Franzen Sammy, give them 8-10 minutes a game and anything they bring you offensively is a bonus. I still have some concern with taking Cleary off of the third line, but with the lead the wings have over the rest of the league they can afford to experiment a little with the third line.

I actually didn't like the way our top 2 lines played last night. The problem with putting Sammy on the top 2 lines is that either Cleary or Hudler must lose ice time. The problem with putting him on the 3rd or 4th line is that he isn't a grinder. I think it'd be worth a shot, however, to play him with Draper and Maltby. Neither of those guys can shoot either, so Sammy wouldn't be taking anything away from them.
