e_mcgrath88 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2008 (edited) Holland's going no where. Fans and media in Toronto have no sense of reality. They think that there's going to be people lined up wanting the GM job, since Toronto is an original 6 team, but it's sooo far from the truth. Also, Toronto media said the Leafs GM job is the crown jewel of GM jobs. Again, that's sooo far from being true. I would think under the current conditions, Toronto would be very low on someone's wish list. I've heard reports that no one high up in Hockey wants the Toronto GM job, because the organization is in such a mess and the ownership is horrible. Add to that, the pressure from fans and media is literally insane! People in Toronto either, like I said, have no sense of reality, or they just don't listen. I've mentioned this before, but Jimmy D was asked if someone from the Wings Organization would be hired by the Leafs and Develano said, "The Leafs are dreaming in technicolor". uhh.. actually their will be a lot of interest in the GM job in Toronto.. I dont know where you have heard these "reports"... Bowman was interested in a job with Toronto and he said it himself.... Doggy 130 Report post Posted January 25, 2008 I have no doubt that Bowman, Yzerman or Nill would definitely go to Toronto if the offer was good enough. If the Leafs were to give Bowman absolute power over the operations of the club, of course he'd take on the challenge. Same goes for Yzerman or Nill. Yzerman I think is less likely as I think he'd want to do more of an apprenticeship first, he's no Bowman yet. Jim Nill however, is more than ready. Losing one of our boys as speculated is definitely not an impossibility. Let's be fair dinkum here guys.

Otherwise it would be like trying to repair a boat with a 10 foot hole with a couple of 2 by 4’s and some spackle.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 25, 2008 They hired him for the same reason they drafted Syl Apps Jr and Syl Apps III...his dad was good at what he did, so clearly he will be. They didn't draft either one of them. Syl Apps III played two years in the Leafs farm system after signing as an undrafted free agent out of college. Syl Apps Jr. was never Leaf property at any time, but he had a respectable career nonetheless. Also, there are some that keep saying that the Toronto media is dreaming that Scotty Bowman (or anybody else with Detroit's management) would go, but Scotty Bowman very clearly said on Hockey Night in Canada in front of the entire hockey world that he was willing and had at one point agreed to go to Toronto. Just because they've been in one place for a long time and have been successful doesn't mean they wouldn't go elsewhere. Sometimes, there's the desire for a new challenge, or a chance to be "the guy", in the case of Nill. Like it was said before, being the guy to build the team that ends Toronto's Cup drought pretty well guarantees you god-like status. I think there's still a chance that it'll be Bowman. Peddie said that they will be hiring the President of the team, who will have the option of also being the GM, or hiring his own guy to be GM. They will throw oodles of money at whomever they target as "their guy". It's just a matter of finding the right one. As for the people that are tired of all the Toronto talk, I don't blame you, but Leafs talk sells and gathers ratings, so they won't dither far away from it. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 25, 2008 I agree that Nill is their best bet, but I'm sure he'd have the same reservations that Scotty did when they first approached him - total control over the club isn't going to happen, so what's the point? They've backed themselves into a corner where they have to give total control now, which is what Cliff Fletcher has and is what the next guy will have. As it has been called, the "Colangelo Clause"
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted January 25, 2008 I know who the next Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager is going to be. Its going to be Brian Burke. Cliff Ferguson's interim contract is for 19 months. WTF is 19 months? Nothing is 19 months. There is no standard time limit that equals 19 months. Brian Burke's contract with Analheim will be finished in 19 months. Brian Burke would love to be the next Leaf GM. And he will be. Look for him to trade the farm for Sundin this season to help him win this year, and to stock his team of the future. Remember, Burke was an attorney, he is crafty. He will ask to be let out of the last year of his contract right after their current season is over. If they let him go, he will take Bertuzzi with him. If they don't let him go, he will be in Toronto the following year. Yzerman will NEVER leave Detroit, as long as the Illitch family owns the Red Wings. Detroit made him almost as much as he made Detroit. He will learn the front office from the best, then someday he will take over the front office and once again be the best. He has 20-30 years left in Detroit. Burke hates the Red Wings. There will once again be a great rivalry between the Leafs and the Wings.
