Yzermaniac192005 0 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Its the hits to the back of the knee that does the most damage. Either way, knee to knee is no joke and should be taken seriously, it can end careers.
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted February 1, 2008 Ruutu took a ******* pounding from McCarthy Not nearly enough. That kind of schitt sickens me when I see it.. Ruutu should've been meat-paste on the ice.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted February 2, 2008 That would be why i said, hard to tell, and even looked like. Never said he did for sure or that he meant to do it. I'm sure it was more just instinct out of Ruutu. I have had my knee taken out twice by opposing players and currently have not ACL or MCL because of it. I do feel bad when it happens to other players no matter how minor or serious it maybe. Looked like an accident to me. Let me just preface this by saying Ruutu is a slug and I have no love for his type. That being said, this didn't look intentional to me at all. The only thing that looked deliberate to me was his right elbow getting up high. You want to see a deliberate knee on knee, watch a Bryan Marchment clip. I didn't see nor am I going to haggle over Ruutu's knee appearing to move 2.6 degrees this way or that to deliberately take out Kovy's knee. He went full speed for the hit and nearly sent himself over the boards. I don't think he was trying to hit his knee.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted February 2, 2008 Ruutu is a dirty player, but this was not a dirty hit. How you can claim 'He seemed to be going for the body then when Kove moved it looked like he targeted the right knee.' is beyond me, given that there was a fraction of a second between Kovalchuk moving and Ruutu hitting the boards. Another hit this brings to mind is Marchment on Modano..Marchment was a supremely dirty player, but he had a similar experience with Mike Modano where he was coming in clean and Modano sidestepped and left his knee in Marchment's path. Naturally Marchment was suspended because of his reputation....but the hit itself was not dirty.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted February 2, 2008 Still looks like to me he led with the knee and elbow just about the whole time.
eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 Still looks like to me he led with the knee and elbow just about the whole time. Compare the position of Kovalchuk's knee in the last frame to the first frame. If you seriously think Ruutu was TRYING to knee-on-knee Kovalchuk, you will probablyu say something like 'he aimed it after Kovy moved' which is NOT the case. Ruutu's knee is exactly centered on where Kovalchuk WAS, which is a result of the fact he was lining him up for a bodycheck. Had it been an intentional knee-on-knee, Ruutu would have lined up with Kovalchuk's KNEE.
Elshupacabra 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2008 (edited) He wasn't going for the knee the whole time, he was going to check Ilya legally, but then when Ilya moved he tried to still get a piece of him and reached out with his leg and elbow and thats how it happened, he wasn't going for the knee from the beginning, his reflex was just to get what he could, and he happened to catch his knee.
