stormboy 47 Report post Posted January 31, 2008 (edited) I was just wondering what people's opinions were about who's going to make the cut this year. obviously it's a little early to make any real solid predictions, but, hell, people make pre-season playoff predictions. something interesting i noticed today regarding standings: the western conference is a cluster f-- well, it's crowded. the wings are the only team in the west to have won seven (or more) of their last ten games, and only two teams have won less than five of their last ten (chicago with four and st. louis with three). so twelve of fifteen have won five or six of their last ten; no one's really hot, no one's really cold. also interesting that the gap between the second place team (san jose) and the second to last place team (chicago) is only thirteen points, which, incedentally, is less than the gap between the wings and the second place team, even if the sharks win their game in hand. so, that being said, my current predictions for the west: 1. detroit 2. calgary 3. san jose 4. anaheim 5. minny 6. dallas 7. colorado 8. vancouver kipper's been hot in calgary of late, which i have a feeling will bring them up to the front lines. to me, aneheim is the real wild card here. not only does their fate simply affect themselves, but a real hot ducks team will beat up on divisional opponents dallas and san jose, possibly affecting their playoff standings. phoenix has been playing well of late but i don't see them having all the right pieces to make the cut. although, they did play great against the wings last night -- ozzy really won that one for us. i could see them squeaking in. similarly, columbus, much improved over last season, i still don't think quite has it. leclair has been frequently brilliant this year, but i'd still rather have consistency over seven shut outs. i don't see their offensive weapons really staking up down the stretch either. i'm disappointed that chicago has been doing so poorly lately; i would have loved to have seen them make the cut, maybe as the eight team to our first. but, alas. and for the east: 1. ottawa 2. pittsburgh 3. carolina 4. jersey 5. philly 6. montreal 7. rangers 8. islanders or boston pitt's goaltending is in a bit of a slump right now, but when crosby comes back and conklin / fleury (if healthy) are playing well, i really think the penguins could challenge this year. they're the prediction that i'd be the least surprised if i was way off on, but i could see them easily finishing in second place. flyers are on a hot streak right now, beating up on some pretty weak teams (florida, toronto, atlanta, LA, washington) over that stretch, though it did include a crazy game over the sens. thoughts? edit: grammer, spelling and content. guess i need to proof read more. WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted January 31, 2008 No 5th seed in the west. Interesting! 5th place was too frightened by the possibility they may have to face the Winged Wheel at some point during the post season, therefore they anonymously withdrew. timothy1997 0 Report post Posted January 31, 2008 5th place was too frightened by the possibility they may have to face the Winged Wheel at some point during the post season, therefore they anonymously withdrew. so does the 1st seed or the 4th seed get the bye then. I always thought the 4th seed plays the 5th seed. If that is the case, wings need to lose some games to backpedal into the 4th slot.

Take out the games in hand and as of today it looks like this 1 Detroit * 52 80 0.769 126 2 San Jose * 51 63 0.618 101 3 Minnesota * 51 61 0.598 98 4 Calgary 51 60 0.588 96 5 Dallas 54 63 0.583 96 6 Colorado 51 58 0.569 93 7 Vancouver 51 57 0.559 92 8 Anaheim 54 60 0.556 91 9 Phoenix 51 56 0.549 90 10 St. Louis 49 53 0.541 89 11 Nashville 51 55 0.539 88 12 Columbus 52 56 0.538 88 13 Chicago 51 50 0.490 80 14 Edmonton 53 51 0.481 79 15 Los Angeles 52 43 0.413 68 The #8 spot would go to the Ducks with 91 points at this rate. There are 7 teams witin only 3 points of this cut-off. Colorado, Vancouver, Aneheim, Phoenix, St. Louis, Nashville and Columbus. 7 teams, 3 spots. I'm going with St. Louis, Phoenix and Vancouver. No to Colorado, they are missing Smyth and Sakic. No to Aneheim, they are back to playing like crap - 4 straight losses during which they scored only 4 goals, Nashville and Columbus have been up and down all year, no consistancy.
