YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 IMO Blake is "okay", but I'd rather have someone a few years younger, & less injury prone...Rumors on this board claim Brad Stuart is in Holland's sights - however I myself haven't read anything on that DETROIT FREE PRESS: Quoted Larry Wigge of NHL.com that three Red Wings scout watched the recent St. Louis Blues-LA Kings game leading to speculation the Wings might be interested in Brad Stuart. Wigge called it "due diligence" on the Wings part to find a bargain to make their club stronger. Wigge suggested Kings blueliner Jaroslav Modry might be a good fit. Earthhuman 8 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Nick Lidstrom was the first European player to win the Conn Smythe in '02. Sergei Fedorov led the team in total points in the playoffs during the Cup run in '97. Dominik Hasek played a key role in winning the 3rd Cup in '02. I'd say that counts as being led at the top by Europeans. Canadians are obviously important like I mentioned in my earlier post but to discount European players - especially in Detroit - just doesn't make much sense in my opinion. Bad board to say this, but Forsberg is/was one of the best playoff performers I've seen.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Just one more thing to add. How does Sid the Kid fit in. He's Canadian but he doesn't fit the mold. He's not big and tough and he's highly skilled. And following this line of reasoning - who is more "Canadian" in his style of play, Crosby or Ovechkin?
Sergeiwasmyfav 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 I like Don Cherry for the most part, but what bothers me about him is that he never seems to acknowledge that there is a place in the game for finesse players. (Or if he has, I have never seen him say it; however, I can't claim to have seen every Coach's Corner ever done.) Will a team of all finesse players win the Cup? No, most likely not. However, I don't think a team of all gritty, tough players would win it either. There has to be a good mix, and this is something I think Don doesn't want to admit. There is a place for both types of players in this league and on a Cup championship team.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Pleaaassseeee. Don hasnt been left behind. The guy has been the same his entire life, and every Canadian I've ever met loves him. People hate the guy because he LOVES HIS COUNTRY, and call him a racist because of it. Well, I love Canada too, and I too believe that there the best. Are you American? Dont you believe that Americans are the best? There's a difference here tho. I watch Don because he's sort of insane. I can appreciate the fact that he loves his country and bla bla but some of the stuff he says is just silly and incredibly funny to watch. Also I wish I was related to him so I could get some of those badboy suits.
Redmen and Their Wives 0 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Red Wings draft picks by nationality since 2000. Russians: 6 Europeans: 25 North Americans: 24 Seems pretty balanced to me. The Europeans have just tended to be more likely to develop into bonafide NHL'ers. Free agent acquisitions: Russians: 0 Europeans: 3 [Lilja, Sammuelsson, Hasek] North Americans: 7 [Lebda, Drake, Osgood, Cleary, Downey, Ellis, Rafalski] I just don't buy that the team needs "more Canadians" like that's automatically going to make the team better. Do they need Ryan Smyth when they already have Tomas Holmstrom? Do they need Danny Briere and his -20 rating when they already have Pavel Datsyuk?
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Bad board to say this, but Forsberg is/was one of the best playoff performers I've seen. On the topic of playoff performers - this is why it baffles me that people are so hot on getting Marion Hossa at the deadline, 13 goals in 55 playoff games? Ouch.
