Hossa Sweepstakes down to four teams?

Its doubtful Anaheim is in the running to get Hossa. Montreal, San Jose, and Detroit can all afford to re-sign Hossa. Anaheim (and Ottawa) would have to move players and/or risk losing other players to offer sheets if they re-signed Hossa.

Ottawa has nearly 40M tied up for next year. With an estimated cap of about 54M, that leaves 14M for Ottawa to re-sign Hossa (7M), Commodore, Kelly, and Meszaros, find a replacement for Redden (who they dont want to re-sign) and possibly re-sign Stillman. Even assuming they trade Emery, its still not enough.

As for Anaheim, theyve got cap problems of their own. In order for them to have room to re-sign Hossa, theyd have to hope that Niedermayer retires, replace all of Niedermayer, Selanne and Weight from within, hope that Hiller (and particularly) Perry sign reasonable contracts, and probably trade Marchant (good luck) to booot.

Look the only thing that you've said that I disagree with is Flip. He's too highly rated to be traded and we'll send Kindl, Quincey, Emmerton and co packing before him. You don't send a 23 year old who's on track to score 20 goals, even if it is for Hossa. Yes Hossa would probably stay for at least 2-3 years, but nothing is guaranteed. Too much risk associated with trading a guy that's a young 2nd line NHL'er. Trading away prospects/picks would be a better option and I'm sure if we do pull the trigger that would be our approach.

How much risk can there be. Whoever gets Hossa will also be getting him with a confirmed long term deal that he has claimed as a requirement in acquiring him. Flip is on pace for 20 goals. Ok so what? Hossa is tearing that to shreds. A superstar for a young guy getting started, who we don't even know if he will reach the standards of Marian Hossa. Kindl Quincey and the like are not all going to be traded before flip. If anything maybe 1 or 2 of the upcoming d-men will go over with flip, but to land hossa Flip has to be the center of the trade.

In my book that is ok.

So another classic deadline deal would be done. Selling off your future for one guy, simply marvellous.

I don't know why we're even discussing this. I bet behind closed doors they aren't even bringing up Filppula at all in trade talks.

Heh, what makes you so sure theyre not? Hopeful speculation? We aren't throwing away our future for one player. It would flip and maybe a d-man. We aren't talking about some 38 year old who is on the verge of retiring. Marian Hossa is 29 with a lot of life left in him.

like Mats Sundin....

exactly, I am much more for acquiring Hossa over sundin, who WILL be a rental player and probably command something close to what a Hossa deal would command.

Because when was the last time we traded away a piece of our future at the deadline? It's always fringe players, picks or prospects.

Sundin is a great player no doubt, but when i started hearing grumblings on HNIC that he might just go to some place to win a cup and then go back to toronto...

nooo thanks!

I completely agree Aussie. But we are talking about Hossa here, and Atlanta has stated that they want two right now players, that are young and moving up. I would say throw Kopay in there with Flip.

IMO, itll be Quincey and Flip with a pick. If theres a Dman involved, theyll want a young guy with some NHL experience.

The difference here is that Hossa is likely not a rental and such a move would be considered a "hockey trade".... Opportunities to land a franchise right winger don't come around very often.

So I guess that's how it is these days. Draft a guy, develop him, have him play (and perform) in the NHL for a season or two, then dump him...

Greeeeat!

Yeah pretty much, unless we want to get all sentimental and settle for mediocrity when superb is staring us in the face

Honestly, if the Wings pull of a deal for Hossa (who, mind you, is a couple months younger than Datsyuk) for Filppula (+ whatever) you won't care a wink when Marian is putting up 50+ goal seasons riding shotgun to Datsyuk.

you have to remember..how many times does this kind of a chance come around where we the wings can land someone like hossa. its not like we give up our up and comers every year for some player that never works out. its hossa....do you not understand that?

sometimes u have to put ur emotional attachment to the player aside. i like flip too, but to get hossa who might not even be in his prime yet is good.
