Khan: Filppula Going Nowhere

Yeah because I said he was worthless and should be traded for a bag of pucks... Did you take it upon yourself to be LGW resident ******* or something? If theres on thing I can't stand, its when people take an argument to ridiculous heights, which is exactly what youre doing: I say hes not a superstar, and yet you act like I said he was a steaming pile...

Anyways, the point here is that hes being just a tad bit overrated by folks on this board who are all ready to crown him as the next Henrik Zetterberg. In Hanks second year, he mightve hit 60 points if it werent for the leg injury, and he had all the makings to do that when he went down. My biggest problem with Flip is that I just dont see those natural offensive instincts in him that Hank and Datsyuk have. Knowing where to go to make the offensive play, knowing when to shoot versus when to pass - he just hasnt caught on to this things yet. Sure, he can work on developing his instincts, but I think theres only so much you can make up versus that which is inherent.

That being said, I do think Flip has the overall skill to put up 20-25 goals once he develops more fully, but hell never be the 30-40, 80-100 point guy that some people think hes just going to turn into overnight. Hes a defensive forward at heart, with the skills of a second line player. IMO, I expect him to be a 20g, 60pt player over his career. Definitely worth a lot, but when you have the chance to trade him for a bona fide superstar, his potential takes a back seat..

I think that you are overratting Hossa and underratting Flip but that's just my opinion and it happens to be shared by Kenny and Babs. But it is irrelevant because we aren't going to fork over $8M for Hossa next year when we have to take care of Hank. And nobody is interested in giving up Flip for a rental.

You can't say for sure that, if given the opportunity, both Holland and Babs would take Flip over Hossa. That's an inane argument.

But it is irrelevant because we aren't going to fork over $8M for Hossa next year

If he were to come here, it would be for 7 or less. That would be perfectly doable, even with Hank's raise on the horizon.

And nobody is interested in giving up Flip for a rental.

All signs point to Hossa being a long-term acquisition. This has been stated ad nauseam.

In conclusion, you're pretty much one of the worst posters on these boards.

The only Thrashers game I've seen this year was when Hossa put up 3 goals against us  So obviously he can score, but what about when he's not scoring? Is he the next Lang-I can score clutch goals but most of the time I am floating around like an idiot-type player? Don't flame me, I honestly don't know, I just remember a few years back thinking he doesn't know how to play any D. There are obviously certain people that can get by with their suspect defensive play due to the amount of offense they generate, but I just don't like seeing lazy players on Detroit because people like Pav and Hank work their asses off forechecking and backchecking and I hate seeing other people free-load.

Also, 9-10 million? No player on the Detroit Red Wings should make more the Lids, that would be so wrong in so many ways.

He's great in all three zones. If he weren't an explosive scorer and an Atalanta Thrasher, he'd be known as a solid two-way player.

All i have to say is, what'd i tell you?

A ton of you were tossing Filppula's name around like he was of equal value as Hudler.

Anybody looking from a GM point of view would have seen this would be obvious.

Guys that were throwing Filppula and Franzens name around simply were not using a logical thought process.

That’s according to Khan(!), who blogged from the evil depths of Rexall today.

Also worth noting that, as rumors swirl prior to Tuesday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, Babcock said Valtteri Filppula isn’t going anywhere. He had been rumored as possible trade bait for Atlanta’s Marian Hossa. Filppula was back on a line with Pavel Datsyuk and Tomas Holmstrom in practice.

Believable? Yes. Could Babcock by lying? Yes. Gut tells you? Fil’s staying.

And from Helene St. James’ blog,

“Guys like Val Filppula and (Johan) Franzen, they’re not going anywhere, I can tell you that right now,†Babcock said.

And how about “guys like Hudler, Kopecky or Lebda?†No word on that...yet.

What did you tell you people? Flip is staying because everyone, ESPECIALLY Mike Babcock, rates him and the coach will get his way.

Yeah, really. I mean, Filppula has the potential to be a 20-25 goal, possibly making him a good 2nd line player (which would finally give this team secondary scoring), but the tearm superstar is really ballparking it.

Look at it this way: Ovechkin is a superstar; Kovalchuk is a superstar; Lecavalier is a superstar. Can you really compare Filppula to those players?

Thing is, I hear everyone saying he's a 20 goal guy but in his 2nd season as a 23 year old he is on track to net 20 goals. He's still quite a few years off his prime and yet he's almost at the mark many expect him to be for his career. I think people are underrating his offensive potential just a little.

No but he'll be a solid two-way player who can score around 20 goals a year. Pretty valuable if you ask me, especially at his age.

Not sure what some of you people are thinking when you already pronounce Filppula as a bad player... Filppula is a good YOUNG player and he shows flashes of his potential, he's a much larger offensive threat now than he was a year ago; I'm sure his name was mentioned in every offer the Wings had going as what something the other teams wanted in return. You can't just trade off all your assets year after year, but some of the people that go nuts on this board don't seem to realize that, they think that prospects grow on trees and would deal them off for ex players who are at the end of the line just because of whatever affections they may carry. I'm glad that Holland didn't trade him (Filppula) at this point.
