Presidents Trophy

So if the Wings win 9 of their next 14 games, we will win the Presidents Trophy (unless the Devils win all their games and score an insane amount between now and then as well as play amazing defense to beat us in the goals for-goals against tie breaker (as we would have the same number of points, wins, and haven't versed each other this year).

I know this means nothing come playoffs, but its still nice to know that the team pretty much didn't play at all through an entire month and are still the statistical favorites for the trophy by a decent margin.

By the way, thats 9 of 14 games left, so we also have some room for error. Knock on wood.

And for those of you curious- yes I was bored enough to calculate it all out; its 1:30 am and I'm not tired at all. I don't even know if this is worth discussing. I'm really just bored...

It's interesting. It's a testament to the skill on this team that they built such an early lead that they can afford to screw up quite a bit and still wind up on top. Will it happen? Like you pointed out the odds are good, but I don't think it matters if the Wings win the President's trophy either way.

Some people think the President's trophy is cursed and they point to the fact that Detroit has won it many years now with nothing to show for it. I would coutner by saying the last time we won the cup we also won the President's trophy. And what it all comes down to is that historical liklihoods are meant to be broken.

A buddy of mine at work is a Dallas fan and he's been breathing down my neck for about the past month. This should shape up to be a fairly exciting end to the season, with the President's trophy race being at least somewhat close. I can't really see the Wings faltering again though, and if Kronner and Rafi's returns are any indication, when Nick hits the ice again the rest of the leage had better look out.

After the disaster that was February, I think that winning the Presidents Trophy would be a nice boost towards the playoffs. Not that the team needs it to win the Stanley Cup, but it would be nice.

Winning the pres. trophy would be an awesome, even better than that would be a nice winning streak entering the playoffs.

I still don't believe the Wings can have an early failure in the post-season. It's happened far too many times and I think they understand what they have to do to make it to the end. This is the year we HOPEFULLY win the Presidents Trophy and the Stanley Cup, and prove all the disbelievers wrong.

With all our previous early round exits, I want to blame a lot of it on our best players being old and worn down, while our new players had no playoff experience, so they didn't know exactly what was needed of them. Now that our older superstars have all moved on (ie Yzerman and Shanahan) and our younger players have turned into veteran superstars with plenty of playoff experience (Zetterberg, Datsyuk), I think we're better prepared for the post season. Hopefully this year Hudler, Fillppula and Kopecky can step it up to a playoff level. We're definitely going to be needing them, and they could very well be the difference between an early playoff exit and a Stanley Cup.
