Flashback: Dan Cleary

And over 40,000 people were killed in accidents not related to alcohol. Statistics are skewed. Now I don't deny that sometimes people just get totally wasted and run over someone or drive right into opposing traffic, however the majority of the time that drunk drivers get into accidents the accident isn't even their fault.

And please don't argue with me on that point, it was told to me by my probation officer after I got my DUI.

You sound like a MADD representative. I was drag racing when I got my DUI. Drag racing is dangerous in and of itself. I was also 3.5x the legal limit at that time. Even with all that, I was driving better than most people do sober. I got pulled over for speeding.

Now I don't excuse me drinking and driving, nor do I excuse me drag racing on a main street, however, you equating what I did to playing Russian Roulette is retarded.

I am a bartender so I have DOZENS of friends who have gotten DUIs and the majority of the time these people are fine to drive. Obviously there are exceptions to that. For instance I know a girl who failed a roadside test, yet going by her BAC she was ok to drive.

I just miss the old days where bartenders cared about their customers and wouldn't let them drive drunk, but if they deemed them ok to drive then they would let them go and if the cops pulled them over the cops would generally ask them to go straight home and escort them there.

This whole DUI campaign is about money-grabbing. I know enough judges, lawyers and politicians that I know that for sure. My apologies to anyone who knows someone who was killed by a drunk driver, but I have a friend from childhood who was killed by a NON-drunk driver.

As you so elegantly mentioned in your first sentence driving is ridiculously dangerous as it is. Why in the world would you make the dangers exponentially worse? Why bring up the 40K fatalities of non-DUI driving? Are you trying to make an implication that driving in general is somehow remotely close to being as dangerous as driving under the influence? If that were your argument you'd have to imply that 1 out of every 3 drivers on the road is over the limit. That is beyond insane. The likelihood of getting in a fatal accident when you've been drinking skyrockets compared to the likelihood when you're sober. That's why there are laws against it.

That bolded section following the statement that you were drag racing is telling. One of the biggest problems when one's judgement is impaired by alcohol is that, wait for it... one's judgement is impaired. You may THINK you're driving fine and better than everyone else, but you'd be dead wrong. Decision making is slowed/dulled. Reaction time is slowed/dulled. Hand-eye coordination is dulled/slowed. But the kicker is that you think you're doing just fine. That's the problem. If people realized at the time they were under the influence that their driving capabilities are impaired, they'd never get behind the wheel. But they've been drinking so they drive.

If drinking did nothing to one's driving ability there wouldn't be a fuss made. It does, so there is.

See, here is a guy who had a drunk driving ticket and did he blow his head off with a shotgun? Nope. Why, because his last name wasn't Tootoo. Yea JT, take that you piece of crap human. You want to play diry on the ice, I'm playing dirty on the boards.

 wow....you need help.

as for the Cleary article, great read. I am so happy that he was able to make it here and become such a great hockey player. I am very happy that we have him locked up and that he will continue to wear the Winged Wheel.
