Brad Stuart out rest of Reg. Season

If the playoffs started today, I think he'd be in the lineup w/ no mention of this injury. He'll be back.

My thoughts exactly, if this was a situation where the wings need him he would probably splint it up and be on the ice

i realize it's a part of the game and it happens to every team...but goddam. i'm tired of our playoff chances being like...well, if bertuzzi had been 100% / if schnides hadn't broken his writs / if kronner was ever healthy for a playoff game / if zetterberg didn't have back issues during the playoffs / whatever. i want a complete, healthy wings team to play a ******* playoff series. (i'm sorry, matt, for the profanity. i'm a little upset.) if we lose, whatever, of course i'll be upset...but i'll know that the WINGS got beaten by a superior opponent. not the wings lite got beaten by...whoever.

whatever. we were fine enough without him, i guess. but i liked him. and now we CANNOT afford to lose any other blueliners until the playoffs are over.

update from MLIVE:

Update from the morning skate in Nashville: Defenseman Brad Stuart is out for the rest of the regular season, and possibly the start of the playoffs, with a non-displaced fracture in one of his fingers, general manager Ken Holland said. It happened during the third period of Wednesday's game when he blocked a shot. They're not revealing which finger or which hand.

Holland said doctors told him Stuart would be out three-to-six weeks. The team believes it'll be closer to three weeks. He'll resume skating by the middle of next week. Coach Mike Babcock said Chris Chelios will take Stuart's spot on the second pairing with Niklas Kronwall, at least initially, while Andreas Lilja is paired with Brett Lebda.

None of the team's injured forwards will return tonight, so Derek Meech will play up front again. They're hoping Kris Draper (groin) can return Saturday in Columbus. Holland said there's a slim chance that Dan Cleary (fractured jaw) could play Saturday, but added that it's more likely to be next Tuesday in St. Louis or a week from today at home against the Blues. It'll depend on how he feels after having the wires surgically removed from his mouth on Monday.

Valtteri Filppula (twisted knee, groin) said he feels better but, naturally, they're not taking any chances. Tomas Holmstrom (strained abdominal muscles) won't play Saturday but should be back next week. They believe Darren McCarty (ribs) will be ready for the last three or four games of the season.

Unbelievable. It's always the guys that I like that get injured. God forbid one of the s***ty defenseman like Lebda sustains an injury like that.

I really hope he won't be gone for too long, because he's been a really great pickup. The Wings need his physical play for the playoffs.

I am so f-ing pissed right now. I can't believe this s***. I really hope that this horrid luck with injuries stops as soon as the post season begins. This is just getting to be ridiculous.

I guess the only positive thing is they believe it'll only be 3 weeks which is right as soon as the playoffs start.

You gotta think players do tend to play with injuries all the time in the playoffs , and I don't think a broken finger is anywhere near as bad as what it could have been. Then again I'm just trying to be really positive. :(

So now this means Lebda and Lilja will be on a pairing together? Just the fact that one of them would be in the lineup was bad enough before, now both will be playing regular minutes again in the playoffs. Wow... just, wow.

Anyone know Steve Duchesne's phone number?

No but I heard Jiri Slegr has nothing to do right now!

LOL

Don't worry. Stuart will be back for Round 1. That's what they are making it seem like anyway..

I agree with those saying he shouldn't be out for more than a few games in the playoffs if it is his finger. I don't mean to sound unsympathetic to Stuart or anything, but if Stevie could basically play on one knee in the '02 playoffs, and you could see the pain on his face every time he got knocked down and had to get up, and kept getting up over and over, then Stuart can play with a ******* broken finger!! (Sorry for the f-bomb, Matt). I mean, seriously, I don't want him out there if he will be a detriment to the team, but again, see comparison above. It's a finger.

Which is exactly why Stewie will not even miss any games in Round 1. Players have played on more serious injuries through the playoffs. Everyone's a little banged up. A broken finger isn't a big deal.

I'd love to see any of you guys questioning his heart go out there and play hockey with a broken finger. You wouldn't last a shift. Easy to question a guys heart from behind your keyboards and monitors, folks, entirely another trying to hold a hockey stick with a broken digit and compete at the NHL level, not to mention take shots, dish out hits, etc.

As has already been stated, if it were the playoffs, he'd probably be out there. And this time of year, who the hell knows if it's actually a broken finger or he just wants to go home and spend time with his wife and soon-to-be born child.

I'm not at all questioning his heart. Like you said if it were the playoffs he'd be playing. I'm just stating that several players DO play on more serious injuries than a broken finger.

I didn't compare him to me. I wouldn't last a shift if I were 100% healthy. I compared him to another hockey player (Yzerman) playing the exact same sport at the same level, who played through an injury that anyone would concede is worse than a broken finger. And yes, if Stevie could do what he did in the '02 playoffs on that knee, Stuart should play with a broken finger. Yeah, you are right, it may hard, it may be painful, but as Hockeycrazy said, players have played through much worse in the playoffs. And just to clarify, I'm not questioning his heart right now. I'm simply saying he should be out there for the playoffs.

This sucks...has to be Lilja's doing--he was a healthy scratch and then all of a sudden on of our d-men is hurt . Anyways, hopefully Stuart is a quick healer and we'll see him for the start of the playoffs.

The problem is if he can't hold his stick he's going to be worthless. I'm guessing it's his thumb or pointer which would make it impossible.

You can play with a broken foot, just not a broken finger.

Hopefully it's his pinky on the hand he doesn't shoot with. lol

Could someone please check the game last night and see if that was Stuart that got hit w/ the puck w/ 5.5 seconds left in the 3rd? Thanks.

Yea I thought I saw that too - right at the end there. After he got hit it looked like he waived his arm in pain right before it switched over to Ozzie. I forgot about that only because I was laughing at how Zetterberg brushed off Kopecky when they were waiting in line at the end (as the stars of the game). Z was talking to someone and Kopecky kinda grabbed Z from behind and said something, and Zetterberg shrugged him off like 'Why are you touching me'. Funny stuff
