Hank Dats 'N Homer 81 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 I was looking through some of our rosters and such, and i stumbled onto Jakub Kindl. I was looking at his game logs and it shows that he fluctuates between the kitchener rangers and the griffins and i was just wondering how this can be? I dont follow much minor hockey nor do i really know how it works so im just trying to figure out how the whole thing works out. I was also wondering why Kindl was even playing for the kitchener team if he is in the red wings minors system. The wings have no affiliation with the Kitchener team if im not mistaken. Im lost when it comes to this stuff, can someone try and dumb it down for me? Thanks
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) What probably happened is that when the Kitchener Rangers finished their 2005/06 season, Kindl would've been signed to a PTO (Professional Tryout Contract) so that he could finish the year with the AHL Griffins. He then returned to Kitchener for the 2007/08 season, once again joining the Griffins when Kitchener was eliminated from the playoffs. OHL/WHL/QMJHL players can't join AHL teams until their junior club's season ends. Then they can join an AHL team via PTO, AHL SPC (Standard Player Contract, for undrafted players) or via NHL entry-level contract. They must also be 18 years of age as of Sept. 15th. However, if a junior-aged player signed to an NHL entry-level contract joins either an NHL or AHL team at the end of the season and plays 10 games or more, it counts as a year on that entry-level deal. Junior aged players can be recalled to the NHL at anytime during the season, but only on an emergency basis (Shawn Mattias & Steve Mason are examples of this). Do the OHL and AHL season play at the same time? When are the seasons? And also, i though all players under contract with the wings had to either be in college playing or in one of the teams minor league affiliates. Thats why i was confused to see him playing in another teams lineup. Again, i know nothing about the minor leagues haha can you tell? lol

I believe the NHL and CHL (that is OHL, WHL and QMJHL) have a private agreement in place whereby a junior player contracted to an NHL team can only play for an AHL team if he is 20 by 31 Dec that year. The Wings (as well as all NHL teams) have many players playing junior hockey in the CHL (Emmerton and Mursak come to mind) in addition to those in NCAA and in Europe (Axelsson, Grigorenko and the MSU hero, Justin Abdelkader). The CHL has drafts just like the NHL. As far as I know there is currently no agreement between European leagues, NCAA and NHL in place limiting the age of players moving up to AHL. Ie. You must be 18 before mid-Sept, which is the AHL's own age requirement. The CHL's leagues begin their season mid-Sept and playoffs began about a week ago. The AHL's schedule covers more or less the same time-frame as the NHL's. I think it finishes a week earlier. I hope this answers a few questions. Why would a team want to? Who knocks back a good player for no good reason? I mean, you wouldn't even want to make room for another import or overage player until the offseason so why else? I mean, you wouldn't even want to make room for another import or overage player until the offseason so why else? i know, but it;s happened before.. i think a couple of years ago, though i don't remember the exact situation a WHL team had a player recalled the NHL on an emergency basis. He was there for a while so they made the trades to cover and re-tool for the next year. The NHL team sent him back and the junior team said "no thanks" and he want to the AHL... i think it's only happened once though. one of the weird quirks of the new CBA
OsGOD 3 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) OHL playoffs started last week... Sadly the Whalers and Spirit appear to be all but finished this season Whalers Game 4 and final game is tomorrow night. Smitty...Jeremy Smith (whom just signed a contract with preds) has given up 20 goals in 11-1/2 periods... Dammit I thought each OHL team was allowed 3 "overage" players on their roster... we lost a few great players at the trade deadline for no other reason than becuase they put us over the legal amount of players... I know we have currently two 21 year olds on our team right now and one 20 year old. Edited March 25, 2008 by OsGOD
SpiritFan 37 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) The Spirit aren't done yet! Only down 2-0, both games were 1 goal games, both on the road. Next 2 are at home where they play quite a bit better. Plus, it's 1/2 price beer at the arena for the 2 home games!!! How can they NOT win? MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) Okay. Is that what happened with Tlusty? Tlusty was drafted by the Leafs, and then made a CHL Import Draft selection by Sault Ste. Marie. However, the Leafs decided it was in his best interest to go to the Soo for a year to learn under Hartsberg (also, the Soo already had a Czech player, so the he had somebody there that could relate to him). Tlusty played briefly for the Marlies at the start of the 2006/07 season before being assigned to Sault Ste. Marie.
