At least since last year...........He is good on there. It's nice to see him there. Though I must admit, I haven't had that channel in a long time.

How long has the Murph been working for TSN/NHL Network? I seen him on NHL Network the other day and I was wondering. Is he done as a Wings analyst now and moved on to bigger and better things?

I believe Larry is still the ice level color guy for the redwings. I htink he does Nhl network when the redwings have a few games off in a row, kinda like the same thing Keith Jones does with the Flyers. If they have a few off games, he will do hockey night in canada or Versus. If the Flyers play on Versus he does the Versus studio job.

I'll say it again at the risk of getting another PM from someone claiming to be his daughter. (Yes, that really did happen.)

I think he looks like Conan O'Brien's retarded "special" brother.

He may have done wonders on the ice, but I just don't dig him in the booth (or between the benches).

I like Larry Murphy for the same reasons that non-hockey fans might hate him: he is goofy looking, is not really telegenic in the least, is verbally fluid as a stuttering typewriter, and is not glossy at all. The opposite of sensationalist.

But...he has seen more hockey than the state of Texas, knows everyone in the business, and is respected everywhere. He is also an objective commentator.

The other big sports would never have a Larry Murphy. Another quirk of hockey.

He is unique.

After seeing this thread, I had to go look up my former comments..

Here they are:

First, during the 1st intermission interview with Ken Holland, Murph keeps mugging at the camera like Conan O'Brien's dimwitted brother. Moron, the interview is to your right - stop staring into the camera like a baboon.

Secondly, after Z's goal, Murph's first words, "Zetterberg's not known for scoring goals, he's known for the pass." IDIOT, he scored 39 goals last year. 1 less than Shanny who you gave the verbal BJ to in the pre-game. So, 39 goal scorers are "not known for the shot", but 40 goal scorers are?"

I wasn't a Murphy fan when he played and am even less of a fan of him calling the games. True enough that he knows the game but that does not mean he is good a calling it, he is as exciting and witty as a tomato. In fact its like having Ron Howards mutant brother calling the game. I hope they liven the televised games up by retiring our current crew (or at least Redmond and Murphy)and hiring some new knowledgable and exciting commentators.

I think it was in the third period when the puck took a strange bounce of Osgood's shoulder and rolled across the top of the net and over the back edge and Murphy's cleaver comment was something like: "It looked like the puck stopped for a drink of water from that bottle"

My girlfriend, who is crumby Canadiens fan, look at me shook her head and said "where do they find these guys? Can't they find better announcers?"

Go Murph

yeah, right after they bring back that glow puck...you speak blasphemy..

The glow puck was retarded. But, Its not blasphemy to speak the truth about how Red Wing hockey could be improved. The commentary is terrible even if the commentators are retired Veteran Red Wings. While we are speaking of improving... I would move for a new music man for the games too. I want to hear some good energy music in between plays, throw on some Metallica, or Kid Rock or something to get the juices flowing... I'm sick of hearing the same ol' BS that is played game in and game out. Try going to see a game somewhere other than JLA and see the difference. I saw a few games while I lived in Calgary and I have seen a few here in Montreal and the crowd at JLA is so quiet and well... boring in comparison. The hockey in Detroit will always be better but there is plenty of small things that can be done to spice things up.

I second everything you said here. Yeah, he's goofy and not particularly fluid, but I like him all the same.

I kind of like him just for the fact that he has this certain quality about him...like the goofball kid that always got made fun of by his friends but never got mad and always laughed it off.

...and how about that hair?! He should've played w/o a helmet. No puck could penetrate THAT!!

Here they are:

Just because a guy looks for the pass first, doesn't mean that he can't put up good numbers in the goal scoring department... just ask Gretzky.

Okay, Murphy, I could see someone not liking him that much. I like him, but I don't feel that strongly about it. But Mickey??!! What are you talking about? How can you say Mickey is not knowledgable or exciting? Do you watch the games? Mickey knows a ton about the sport and is one of the best color commentators in the league. He always has a great comment or anecdote or something, and he is never one to hold back his opinion. Ken Daniels is the worst of the three (although not that bad, I just don't care for him) and you didn't say anything about him. Maybe we just prefer different broadcasting styles but I think Mickey is great. What exactly is it about him you don't think is knowledgable or exciting?

I don't question Mickey's knowledge. My biggest beef with Mickey is that he is way to bias. I am a Red Wing fan to the bone... always have been and always will be! However, if we have a bad game or make a bad play I will openly state the truth. Mickey on the other hand always has victim syndrome, in my opinion, and 8 times out 10 will turn our bad play or mistake into something the ref's did wrong or the other team should have gotten called for etc.

JLA music has been a pet peeve of mine for at least a couple of years now. Bowman-era music was great-- plenty of Metallica, AC/DC, Kid Rock, Cooper, Nugent-- but for some time now, The Chicken Dance seems the most exciting thing on the menu.

I know, I know: it's petty and nit-picking, and I doubt our focused players even hear what's playing, but the crowd DOES hear, and sorry, but Gwen Stefani has absolutely NO PLACE IN HOCKEY.

FWIW, my Sabre fiend/friend told me a couple of years back, hearing me whinge about the DRW music, "Oh, start watching Buffalo, our guy plays Metallica!" sut is saying that no longer: BUF music has gotten blandingly boring as well.

Mandate from TPTB? Another Bettmunch memo?
