Are we physical enough to win a cup?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

So im sitting here yesterday nostalgic as ever as I watch my DVD of the Wings 02 cup win, and I couldn't help but notice how physical the Wings were during that series. My question to you all is: Do you all believe we are physical enough to win the cup this year?

I think we were last year! What lost it was goal tending (gasp!!!) and key injuries to our D. D wins Cups as much or more than grit if you ask me. Watch us last year - we took it to Calgary big time and to the Ducks too. Cleary, Homer and others were plenty gritty. Babs had almost everyone throwing hits. Now Franzen is a force as well. It was sooooooo close, and even with the injuries a top notch goal tending performance would have put us in the finals.

same questions every year.

Alas, it is isn't it. Let's not forget something the Wings do in the playoffs almost every year and that is to simply swarm the other team with shots and scoring opportunities. This year we have shown hundreds of times that we can go to the net and get down and in it to score just as much as with pretty plays. Whoever we play is going to see a boatload of offense right in their face. While some of us may question grit, others are certainly concerned about our scoring and having the puck 80% of the game. We are relentless and adaptable, the Borg of the NHL.

I would think it's safe to say we have just as much grit as we did in '02. And we all know what happened that year. :D

Last year we proved we were, and this year we will do it again

...ummm...we did? Yeah we proved that we were able to get 2 wins away from the SCF. But that's about it. Damn good. But not the Stanley Cup. However, this year is the year the Cup comes back to Hockeytown.

No. They suck. Worst team ever. Absolutely horrible forget that the shut almost any opposition down besides there own division, most won't be around. The wings are stupid. Worst players ever, you never see them laying anyone out. Espiacally Kronwall or others.

Oh and I hate April fools and am not going to look at this site again. Until tomorrow

Detroit doesn't go out of its way to be physical all the time, but when the WIngs start getting knocked around, they step it up and return the favor. I absolutely believe Detroit is gritty and physical enough to beat any team in the league. If you've watched 90% of the games this year (like I have), you would be amazed at how physical they have been in some games.

I wouldn't even say our goaltending cost us last year. Our goaltending was plenty good enough to go all the way. It's the key injuries to our defense that hurt us, causing us not to be able to score on those 5-on-3's we had vs the Ducks. If we even had just Schneider, I think we would have gotten to meet the Sens in the finals.

It is going to be hard but doable. IMO it isn't really about crushing someone to the glass but forcing our will to opponents and establishing our game. (yes I have read Art of War.. and watched that NHL commercial too )

Livingthedream isn't a girl. That's supposedly a picture of his sister and her friend.

Jury's still out on why he has it as his Avatar, but most people will probably tell you he has it for two reasons. :P

I thought the poster was one of the girls, and the other girl was the sister.

Anyway, to answer this question, it depends. The Wings strength is not their physicality, but their skill and system. If winning is going to come down to the Wings being more physical than their opposition, then we're screwed, because that's not our game.

Don't forget that there were guys who stepped it up physically last year in the playoffs, that no one expected to, namely Lilja and Markov. If a talentless hack like Kopecky can step it up, and if Lilja picks up his game, then maybe we can get back to that same level of intensity that we saw at times last year.

However, even so, at times this team looked overwhelmed last year when the Sharks or Ducks were playing their cycling system down low against us. As I said earlier, the Wings have to avoid getting into a physical battle of attrition on the ice, because we're not going to win that way.
