Samuelsson says he's ready for the opener, but Babcock won't make final lineup decisions until today

Wednesday April 09, 2008, 12:53 PM

Update from Wednesday's practice: Forward Mikael Samuelsson (groin) said he felt good after practice and believes he's ready for Game 1 vs. Nashville Thursday. But coach Mike Babcock said the final lineup decisions on Samuelsson, Tomas Holmstrom and Brad Stuart won't be made until Thursday morning. Babcock said there's no reason to believe Holmstrom won't be ready, but they just want to make sure. Stuart, coming off a broken right index finger, continues to maintain he's ready to play.

This is what the lines looked like in practice. This is how they are likely to be at the start of the game if those three players can play:

Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Holmstrom

Filppula-Franzen-Cleary

Hudler-Draper-Samuelsson

Drake-Hartigan-McCarty

Out:

Abdelkader-Helm-Downey

Defese:

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Lilja-Chelios

Out: Lebda, Meech

You know, I really shouldn't think like this, but I wish he wouldn't be ready. I don't wish injuries on anyone because I'm afraid it could jinx the rest of the team, but I was really hoping someone else could get in there for Sammy, at least for a few games. Alas, he has recovered more quickly than anticipated.

My personal opinion here, but I still don't understand why/how Hartigan is in the lineup. Yes, he is quick and chips in a goal once in a while, but he has done nothing to impress me to the fact that he should be playing in the playoffs. I'd go with any of the three guys being scratched over Hartigan.

Anyways, that was my Hartigan-rant for the day, but it is nice to see the teams is slowly getting healthy for the playoffs.

Hmm interesting, I read in the paper today that Drapes will center Applicator and Hudler, and Sammy will be out because he isnt ready.

As much as Samuelsson pisses me off, I feel good about this move. The thing that gets my blood pressure going is that he is a 3rd liner who has been forced to play as a top six forward. I have no problem with Samuelsson playing as long as he is not a top-six forward and is not used on the point on the PP. You're going to be hard pressed to find a better 3rd line winger who can put up 40+ points and makes only $1.2M. Babcock is finally using Samuelsson how he should be used.

I am ready for the ELLIS is GOD we need him in the offseason now... with all the padded saves he will receive to the crest.

One of Abdelkader or Downey should be in the line-up.

Sammuelson = another finesse guy who's not even healthy

Abdelkader/Downey = a physical forechecking presence with energy who is healthy.

IF Sammy was healthy, then great, play him. He came up big in last year's post-season. But, unlike Draper or Holmstrom, what he brings to the team is not enough to warrant scratching a healthy player to squeeze him into the line-up. IMO.

I'm not a Sammy fan, but I want someone to explain to me why he should be scratched instead of Hudler?

Sammy has a knack of firing blanks at the goalies thus inflating their stats and making them look super human.. which in return intimidates our guys and they crawl under a rock and die...

No need to senseless make the other goalie look like SUPERHUMAN and give the other team the edge.

Good to hear. I actually don't mind Sammy at all and think he's a decent depth quality guy who's pad shots could actually yield tons of chances for ugly goals for us so it's good to hear he's ready to go. Besides with our top two lines looking pretty tight, he'll make a great 3rd liner.

Well, he definitely made Nabakov look human on May 5th and 7th of 2007.

Damnit can someone please reinjure his groin pleaseeeeeeeeee.

What happend to his wife?... she is EPIC failing!

Maybe we should introduce him to Kwame, he has some connections that may overuse sammys groin

Sammy being back in the lineup compared to some of our 4th liners isn't bad like some people make it out to be. I'd take him anyday over a guy like Drake regardless of their different roles on the team.

I'm not a fan of Samuelsson and would rather see one of the scratched forwards play in his place. However, most of the time when I come on the forum and complain about him, he turns around scores an important goal and makes me eat my words...so let's hope for that if he's going to take up a valuable slot in the lineup.
