Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 (edited) Hartigan's one problem is that he can suck, don't need a sucky player out there if its a tie or we are down. hahaha idk... i am just trying out your logic.... and boy do I sound stupid... how do you feel when you say stuff like that? Pretty hard to to suck when he's stuck in the box most of the game Did no one watch the last 5 or 6 games and see how many penalties Hartigan took? The playoffs get faster and harder to play in, Hartigan will be our liability IMO. Edited April 10, 2008 by Detroit # 1 Fan
Guest MrSandMan Report post Posted April 10, 2008 I doubt either player (Downey or Hartigan) will make a significant difference in the line up. Either one could take a bad penalty... However, Hartigan has a bit more skill (if he skates and works hard) I like the line up if Mac is in there. Also, I'd be happy if Abs was in there.
J-Swift 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 To me, and no i don't have rose colored macslappy glasses on, Mac's experience in the playoffs and his three cup rings make this arguement a bit silly to me. McCarty's game has been on the downturn since before the lockout even started. I really don't think it's fair for Downey, who fought for a spot in training camp and patiently played his role all season, to have his spot given away to McCarty. Opie 308 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 (edited) That's probably the reason. I dont understand why, Downey isnt anymore of a liablity then Drake, Lilja, Draper even. All have worse +/-'s, Hartigan is worse aswell. Just having Downeys presence if Nashville start playing rough is enough to dress him. Are you serious, one of the best defensive forwards to lace up his skates for the Red Wings and you think he is no better on the ice than Aaron Downey? You lose all credibility to that post instantly. Hopefully you were being sarcastic or you meant another player! It is very easy to not be a - player when all you see is 4 minutes of ice time! OsGOD 3 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 Conjuncture for the most part, while he is a good enforcer, I don't see the need for it in this series, Anaheim or San Jose, sure, but Nashville outside of tootoo is pretty tame, So id prefer someone who can put it in the back of the net, not someone who you have to remind every shift not to end up in the sin bin. again, i don't recall downey really taking a bad penalty... but this was already tiredly fought and won in that other thread... the losing side sounded a lot like you? aweeee did you change your name??? sneaky mcsneakerson! Superman54 91 Report post Posted April 10, 2008 McCarty over Downey! Yikes................................not happy about that! I love Darren and all, but Downey has proved that he knows how to be an enforcer out there, and the energy he brings is amazing. Well hopefully game 2 then... Remember kidos, its that one idiotic penalty that can change a whole series. Did you even read the thread? Everything you just said was countered in that thread. Lots of teams play fighters in the playoffs (see the current Stanley Cup Champions). Detroit isn't loaded with fighters like Anaheim so they have to think about using their #1 scrapper in the playoffs just to balance out what other teams are doing. And Downey has NOT been a liability this season with regards to dumb penalties at all. Read the thread and you will see the light. esteef

People just tend to say a "liability" has a bad plus/minus. That isnt true.

Please note that according to the NHL they will be cracking down on late game after whistle hits, so, I dont see the need for another fighter over a skill player. Drake is playing I am happy... but i just don't see you have any basis for your claims against downey. Edited April 10, 2008 by OsGOD

Which is exactly what Downey does NOT do. And putting Nashville down quick is going to require some guys getting their hands dirty, Downey's specialty. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it's not there. esteef

True. And if it were any other fighter than Downey I might be worried, but he has shown time and time again this year that he has his head in the right place, especially during critical situations in the game. peace, esteef

BUT to you saying he hasn't taken penalties at a bad time, didn't he just start a fight and cost Z a breakaway? And your argument that Ana has more fighters and plays them more is in fact a product of the start of that statement. On their roster they have 4 enforcers/fighters, that started all season. Are they supposed to call up Bobby Ryan and the rest of the Portland Pirates to play in the post season, no they dance with who got them there, for them that means most of their fighters play and a guy like Parros sees 5 games of the post season in which they won more than 3x the amount of games he played. They are the exception to the rule, they have so many guys that fight (as well as do other things) that they have to play the enforcers, you make it out like they choose to dress the enforcers! They do have alot of guys who fight, but they dont have to dress them, they choose too. Brad May used to be a great 3rd line guy, but he's nothing more then a 4th liner now. Parros, Sutherby, etc. Last year they had Shawn Thornton, who is a pretty good player, but still a 4th liner. These guys werent liabilitys (Well maybe Parros) I just dont think Downey would do as bad as people think. He doesnt have to play alot, just has to be on the bench.
