Babs as a Playoff Coach

Rate this topic

I would like to hear from some of our more experienced Wings fans what they think about Babcock as a playoff coach. What makes him such a great coach?

What differences do you see between his style and Bowman's?

Is this all anybody can say about Babock? Would it be correct to say he is a better regular-season coach than most but maybe not so good as a playoff coach?

Has he been re-signed? What are the Wings waiting for...?

I think the style of play he likes to see (exemplified in Cleary) is more suited for Playoff Hockey than a lot of coaches around the league, but because you style is suited to playoffs doesn't make you a great playoff coach.

The thing that made Scotty so great (besides great talent, that sounded like a dig on him not meant to be) is that the other coach had no idea what he was going to do, line combos were changing not only all series but some times shift to shift. He would have his best offensive line play a defensive role ans shut down the top line, and then send the grind line out to try and score, he was so unpredictable.

I think we are starting to see a little of that in Babs, it is hard not having the last change, but at home execpt for the 1st line he moved guys around a bit.

Give him time and he will be a great coach. I don't think we will see a Dave Lewis situation where it is a couple of years and done.

Babs has a fire on the bench that Lewis never had, in Det or Bos. I think Lewis was a great locker room, x and o's, type coach. Which was great when he was an assistant to Bowman, but as a head coach he struggled and was, IMHO, way too passive behind the bench.

We've seen that babs has passion behind the bench, and emotion. It is hard to fire your guys up when you don't have much emotion yourself. OF course I was never in the Locker room with Lewis so this is all speculation.

Why isn't he re-signed?

The answer is as follows.

Detroit is expecting the "hometown discount" like they do with everyone.

Babcock is resisting that and playing the 3 seasons, 50 wins card.

He wants to get paid. Plain and simple.

And in my mind if he takes this team deep into the playoffs he has the wings by the short and curlies!!

He serves to win the Coach of the year award, and deserves his money!

Michelin Man Giggy is what made him the bomb! Not to mention he is coaching one of if not the best team in regular season hockey for awhile now... It was a great present to receive this team when he did.

I see a lot of differences... Bowman wins cup(s) babs won a cup!

Interesting take. For the record, Babcock has yet to win a championship at any level.

I like that he demands that his players work hard. All of them. He doesn't coddle the stars, nor should he.

This is only his fifth NHL season as head coach, but he's off to a good start. I like his style. He knows how to win, and it's hard to blame a loss on the coach if the players aren't doing as they're told.

Bowman didn't win a cup until his sixth season. Not a comparison, just food for thought.

I dont think so. Money is only an issue when it counts against the cap...

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't this quite possibly the most physical wings team since the mid to late 90's. And seeing as Babs in the coach I would have to give him the credit for making them more physical, therefore if you wanted a more physical team you would want Babs around, right?

Or am I completely wrong here?

You are completely correct sir.

Although actually I'd say this is the most physical Wings team since 2000. 2002 won one tremendous skill and some grit but not nearly as much as the mid-late 90s and 2000 team had.
