seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 I didn't see this thread until just now, but I had to comment. I saw this story right after it happened, and it sickened me to no end. This is not sportsmanship, this is just plain not caring about winning. The girl hit a homerun, sure, but the rules say she has to round the bases. I hate to bring the men's vs. women's sports argument, but you know that any guy this happened to would limp or crawl around the bases. I swear to God I would tackle my teammates if they tried this bulls***. It's practically an act of treason. You could tell me that she deserved the home run, and I wouldn't even disagree with you, but she couldn't do the easy part of scoring the run, and that's on her. This really just disgusts me. Sports, despite what people say, are about competing and WINNING. Helping the other team win is never OK. For the media to put these girls on a pedestal is just wrong. They're not brave or courageous or good sports, they're bad athletes and bad teammates.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 ^^^ Bingo. The way this story is being portrayed shows the difference in how people view men's and women's sports. No way in hell this would ever happen in a NCAA baseball game. You play to win the game, Herm Edwards had it right.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted May 17, 2008 Even more likely....most guys would refuse the help. I would scoot around the bases on my butt with my bad knee up in the air before I let the other team pick me up. They'd probably detour to right field and dump me on the warning track anyway. See that's the part I'm hung up on. On one hand, you don't want the other team to give you the run like that. On the other hand, if they're stupid enough to just give you a run, why not take it? auxlepli 17 Report post Posted June 18, 2008 Can somebody sum that story up for me? Trying to watch that bored me to tears. I think I must have gotten about half-way through that then just gave up. It's no wonder I don't watch ESPN anymore.

I think I must have gotten about half-way through that then just gave up. It's no wonder I don't watch ESPN anymore. Girl hits ball over fence. Girl blows out knee rounding first. Opponents carry girl around bases. Important points: - It was her first, last, and only home run of her college softball career, and she was a senior. - Home run was eventual margin of victory. - Players and coaches are not allowed to help teammates around the bases nor can a pinch runner be put in to finish the home run trot. Only option was this, or a pinch runner at first and the run doesn't score. (Or so everyone thought. In reality, umps got it wrong and the pinch runner may in fact score.) There you have it, the Cliff Notes version.
