Burnside: Pens in 7

Are you seriously going to expect me to say that Fleury is a better goalie than Turco? This guy carried his team to series victories against the reigning SC champion and the team largely expected to win this one, then bit the bullet when down 3-0 and make the Wings begin to sweat. Fleury faced up against a dud Senators team NOBODY expected would get anywhere, a Rangers squad that has no defense to write home about, and a Philly squad with its two best blueliners out of the running.

Point taken -- but look who the Wings faced their first two rounds before they got Dallas. More tomato cans than a supermarket. Pretty cushy road there, while we're on the subject of getting to face duds. The ease of competition argument goes both ways here I'm afraid.

Doo bee doo bee doo.

I'll give you the Avs, but it's well-known that the Wings' weak spot has been their own division. It's made more complicated by having Osgood swap with Hasek halfway through, but if you're going to ask me to compare matchups, Nashville stood a better chance of winning their series than Ottawa did theirs. Detroit had two opponents that actually showed up to give them a fight. Pittsburgh had zero.

You apparently missed most of the end of the season, or at least didn't pay that much attention out west, not that I blame you, with all that happened at the end of the season (trade deadline on) for the Pens I would be pretty focused on watching them if they were my team too!!!!

Ellis was one of the hottest goaltenders at the end of the regular season, 2.5 game shutout streak going into the playoffs then came Detroit.

Jose ThreeorFour was being very highly touted by the media after the wild series, then came Detroit.

Turco was one of the hottest netminders in the post season then came Detroit.

MAF is playing awesome, the Pens as a team are playing awesome (hence making it to the SCF), but that has been said about many teams that have headed into Detroit.

Now the Wings in the past have shown a propensity to get beaten by a hot goaltender, and MAF right now is probably the definition of hot goaltender, if not him right now I have no idea who!

Fitting.

You're not going to change the complexion of a fan nation. I'm sorry, but stuff like "BURNSIDE SUCKS FOR GOING AGAINST THE WINGS" is built into the machine; opposing it is futile, no matter how "classy" you may be.

And an overall popular opinion of a fan nation is going to do little/nothing in changing my opinion, and sometimes saying, how I think how ridiculous such an aspect of a fan nation can be and is sometimes.

Just like very few people are going to convince you that you should and are going to give full credit to Ken Holland for being as good a GM as some depict on here/should be satisifed with what he did during the trade deadline, etc.

That's the nature of the beast. Fans for every team think their team is the best and only bad luck and poor officiating are the cause for losses.

There are valid points to be made as to why the Pens or Wings could win this series.

I wouldn't be surprised with either outcome.

Here's what I think - we all can agree that defense is a huge factor. Both teams have huge numbers offensively, but check out +/- for the year...

7 Wings in the top 25 - 4 in the top 10 with Datsyuk actually edging out Lidstrom. No Pittsburgh skaters listed down to #29 in the list, Sidney Crosby.

In the post-season the Wings hold the top 4 spots in +/- with Zetterberg leading the way with +15. That's 7 higher than the closest Penguin - Ryan Whitney with +8.

Pittsburgh has a ton of talent, but this is a team they haven't met up with so far this season. They haven't experienced a defense this deep and a puck-possession team this talented yet.

I think it could go past 5 games, but I really think they're in for a shock. Detroit will have a few hiccups, but they're not taking this series lightly. For all the arrogant posts the fans put out, it's not a reflection on how the team will play come Saturday.

I'm glad they're playing though - gives both teams an opportunity to play their best as I think this one is finally a true representation of the two best teams in the NHL battling it out.

GO WINGS!

This could be the best SCF match up in a long time or it could be a white washing that catapults PIT to championships in the near future!

This very well could be the start of a SCF rivalry, Not that both teams will be there every year, but if the Pens manage to hold on to Hossa and pick up a legit #1 d-man (easier said than done) the Wings get a little younger with some up and coming talent, these two have the opportunity to make it to a couple of more finals in the next 3-5 years depending on personnel moves.
