YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 http://blues.nhl.com/team/app?articleid=36...mp;service=page No idea why Toronto does this. Tuckers there already. Why does Toronto need a middle weight? To protect who? And at the expense of a 3rd round pick. Opinions? And sorry if this has been posted already. On the bright side, we wont be seeing as much of Mayers anymore.

YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Means someone's on their way out of Toronto. But who?... Why does it mean someones on their way out of Toronto. Mayers doesnt exactly displace anyone. Especially since they have so many key fixtures in their lineup that are either untouchable through a trade or cant afford to waste their talent in the AHL. On a serious note, Mayers is a good player, but I dont understand why the couldnt have addressed what he brings through free agency. There are about 20 enforcers available in this years UFA pool, and probably a good 10 players who can provide veteran leadership.
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Good deal, outside of Tucker and Bell, the Leafs are softer then jelly. Plus Mayers is one of the better grinding forwards in the league. Did it make sense to make this trade right now? No, does that make it a bad trade? No. I expect the Leafs to be very busy tommorow.
Rice 42 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Weird, weird move for the Leafs to make. Why would a re-building team trade a third rounder for an aging grinder?
Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) Tucker is the one who has been rumored to be on the way out - they have been talking of a buyout for over 2 weeks... Add McCabe to the list of potential buyouts too... http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...y/WBhockeyblog/ Edited June 20, 2008 by Glubki
Blood On The Ice 15 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 I agree, stupid trade. Just goes to show why the Leafs have sucked for so long. They continue to make these stupid moves, signings. Mayers is not worth a 3rd pick. 6th or 7th maybe. Leafs need to build the young talent, not trade the chance away.
rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 (edited) Toronto have been after Mayers for years now. They tried hard to get him at the deadline two years ago. Edited June 20, 2008 by rick zombo

Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Not too bad of a move for TO imo. Wilson's gonna need all the help he can get. Honta yo!!
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 Damn. I've always kinda hoped that Mayers would eventually find his way onto the Wings, but now he's in that black hole that is the Maple Leafs.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted June 20, 2008 I think this is a good move by Toronto. They are the softest team in the league by far, and Mayers will add some much needed grit in their pathetic roster. And Mayers isnt an enforcer, hes a fighter but not an enforcer. There is a huge difference.
DaKineMaui 8 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Damn. I've always kinda hoped that Mayers would eventually find his way onto the Wings, but now he's in that black hole that is the Maple Leafs. I always get a kick outta the "Why did the Leafs do ________" kinda threads. If the Toronto Maple Leafs Management Staff built a house, they would start with the drywall. After 20 years of construction it would be sold for $180. aloha
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 (edited) Tucker is going to be bought out, so the Leafs needed somebody around to stick up for the kids. Tucker is the one who has been rumored to be on the way out - they have been talking of a buyout for over 2 weeks... Add McCabe to the list of potential buyouts too... http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto...y/WBhockeyblog/ McCabe & the Leafs are playing a little game of chicken right now. McCabe says he won't waive his NTC, Leafs won't buy him out, but neither side wants anything to do with each other. Leafs want him gone so badly, that they're willing to scratch him every night until he accepts a trade. Edited June 21, 2008 by MacK_Attack
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 It confuses me why McCabe won't except a trade; he's easily the most hated player on that team. Plus, the Leafs are still a couple of years away from being even a playoff contender, so if he's got the chance to possibly make it onto a good team that can make the playoffs and even contend for the Cup, then why doesn't he? I really don't get it.
Glubki 17 Report post Posted June 22, 2008 He is hoping to get bought out at 2/3 of his remaining salary so he can become a free agent - his buyout amount would be 9.6 million for the remaining 3 years. then he could choose his team and sign another contract at close to 4-5 million a year or so... Basically it's a combination of money and spite...

Cliff has said that it's not his style to play hardball with NTC guys, but I guess McCabe is a special kind of jackass. Yeah he sure is looking like one but I think he'll come to his senses if they can get him moved to a contender.
