Also, about Nolan -- the guy's had about 8,000 chances to come here over the last five seasons. That he hasn't means he doesn't want to come here and/or Holland doesn't want him.

For what it's worth, I've heard he's an ******* from several people who would know.

Oh I agree completely - I hate Owen Nolan with a burning passion, I was just using him as an example.

Your post makes a lot of sense, and I think you are right - there is no need for a big signing, or any signing this off season really - But it will be interesting to see if Holland takes on some depth.

Nolan, Peca, or Liles. Unless I missed someone there's no one out there worth it. Peca is a gritty as hell playoff warrior who could easily be a better Dallas Drake. Liles is a backup plan to Stuart leaving and is developing EXTREMELY nicely. Nolan, well, he'd just be a good pickup.

Wonder how Naslund would fit in here? Maybe it would bring back his scoring touch of years past?

A guy that really needs to redeem himself is Ryder; really nice shot, but has little to no interest in doing anything else on the ice when he doesn't have the puck.

Babcock could make Hudler and the enforcers defensively responsible, I'd love to see what he could do with Ryder. Mike is one of my favorite players, and I've wanted him for the past 3 years, and it hasnt happened. I really dont think it's gonna change now.

I was just going to post that. Conroy is a great locker room guy, he's absolutely hilarious--and I love the hard-nosed hockey style he plays.

I was gonna suggest that, but the guy would take a SERIOUS paycut just to stay with Iginla. Hes gone on record saying that a billion times. Unless Sutter has absolutely no interest in him, he'll be back with the Flames. Its like expecting Draper to not re-up with the Wings when Kenny wants him to return.

The fact that hes not signed yet likely means Sutter isnt making him a priority, as he knows Conroy wont take another offer from a team, rather than the fact that Conroy isnt in their plans.

Ryder has the potential to be another Cleary (improvement in the defensive/forechecking dept), but it's up to him in wanting to change/improve his game...Would be nice to see a guy like Ryder improve his overall game under a coach like Babcock.

See thats why I DONT want Ryder. We have so many guys that are along the 18-25, 50 point track that its gonna be impossible to give them all enough ice time to have them actually perform to those numbers. Its already happening now with Cleary, Sammy, Flip, Hudler, and Frazen all having the potential to easily be 20G, 50P players on a yearly basis but cant get the time..

I'm taking the patient approach with regards to Ryder and his kin. If Ryder wants to win, and is willing to do what it takes to win, he will sign for less than he could potentially get elsewhere with a team that is looking for a Cleary-esque transformation from him. This is the only way he will end up in Detroit, as the Wings cannot afford to pay him the kind of money he might be able to command from a lesser team that is looking to add a first line scoring forward and thinks Ryder is that guy. The only way I won't be happy regarding Ryder is if he signs for peanuts with a contender, and that contender is not Detroit.

My two cents: I second the notion of signing Craig Conroy. I really like his play, and he is a nice guy from what I have seen. I met hime years ago when he played for LA. I would pass on Peca though.

Fedorov to replace Samuelsson.

Samuelsson is under contract for starters. Secondly, Samuelsson is a more productive player than Fedorov at this point in their careers.

I liked Fedorov when he was here, but lets move on already. Nostalgia doesn't win championships.

Agreed.

The same needs to be said about the Shanahan talk; he was a great player when he was here, and I still like the guy, but he's a slug now. He's become nothing more than a perimeter player who's afraid to go in the corners and battle, a role that is completely useless in the playoffs. That pretty much explains why he hasn't done anything productive in that part of the season since 2002.

Any free agents that are signed will be for depth, and I'd rather those players be guys who haven't yet won a Stanley Cup, and give it everything they've got to win one; not a guy like Shanahan or Fedorov that have already been there numerous times, and are basically just going through the motions to collect a paycheck.

I doubt anybody else would like this player, but what about Brendan Morrison. I know he was injured for a majority of last season and he made about 3.2 million. I figure his days in Vancouver are numbered, as it seemed he never really was respected out there. Morrison is a former Michigan player and till last season had played 6 straight seasons of 82 games in the NHL and 76 games the season before that. The question becomes whether or not we could sign him for the same amount or a little less.

'NHL Live' hosts EJ Hradek, & Don La Greca mentioned there were some rumors of Shanny signing with the Leafs come July 1st

That would be a "perfect" Leaf signing... they'll give him a 5 year deal for 5mil/yr and a "no movement" clause then annouce they just signed the "Best Power Forward in the NHL" (circa 1996).
