Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Agreed, chemistry and desire are huge yardsticks. I will say I do think Hossa has desire, he played well against us while the rest of his team took a nap.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 1st thing for Holland was to have a deal in place for Zetterberg... More he's waiting more Zetterberg price is going up. When you see deals that Tampa gave to Malone or Philly to Carter you can except Zetterberg going for big money ($8M). With deal in place for Zetterberg - then you can go after FA's. I don't know why he signed Lilja for 2 YEARS ($2.4M). Malone and Carters prices have absolutely no bearing on Zetterbergs pricetag. Hes not going to take 8M when Lidstrom AND Datsuyk make significantly less AND took less than market value to sign with Detroit, as pretty much every player has to. I said before and still hope it to be true, that we will hand Zetter the exact same contract as Pavel. If Hossa wants in, I suppose we could do that and hope the cap goes up another 6 million or so....
jawbreaker 0 Report post Posted July 1, 2008 Hossa is 29, and he has been putting up big numbers many years. Franzen is 28, and had great 6 months. So if we can get Marian, but have to loose Mule, then you do it! Imagine, if ATL would have accepted trade Franzen - Hossa.

I know what you mean but cap is going up every year - so giving Datsyuk deal 2 years ago for $6.7M was like giving him today $7.7M - $8.0M.

That's exactly what I'm saying... two years ago salary cup was at $47M and they signed him for $6.7M... today cup is up by $10M.

Except for that whole part where there were TONS of players making over 6.7M when Datsyuk signed, and there are 2 making over 7.7 now, and after the off-season, a max of 4. Its not comparable. Players salaries don't rise parallel to the cap.

Casey 145 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I'd let Hossa go unless he could be signed without giving up what we already have. There's a certain chemistry present that I'm loath to mess with.
Booster313 138 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 We've got about $10-12M left for this coming season. With Fil, Ericsson, Jimmy, and a few minor spots left to fill. Absorbing Hossa long-term would be very easy for this year. Next year would be problematic. Huh?!
redwinger4747 6 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I don't want Hossa for anything near what other teams are offering. I'd only want Holland to throw a ridiculous low-ball at him (like 4.5mil per) and say, "Hossa this is the price for the cup. We just won it without you so you have no leverage. Take it or leave it." That's all. No 7 mil contracts, we don't want Hossa for that money because that would cost Franzen AND Filppula. Hossa at 7 instead of Flip at 3 AND Franzen at 4? I'll pass and take my cup-winning team.

Couple things wrong with your thinking.... just because franzen + fillpulla may make 7 million dosent mean that if we sign Hossa for 7 million we have to replace them. The cap just went up and were under the cap by a couple mill at the end of this season so realistically we would only lose filpulla when Z and Franzen need extensions. Also it dosent even have to be fillpulla. Draper will most likely not be making as much and we could free up 3-4 million a number of ways.

Hossa is great and should go for 6-7 million, which isn't worth it to us right now coming off the cup. But hey, if we can somehow get him or Sundin under 5 that would be amazing! Cruiser008 37 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 My guess is that we've offered Hossa (and possibly Sundin) a 1-year deal in the range of 7-8 million and let them know that if they want a real good shot at the cup they know who to call. I knew it!!
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Huh?! What NN means is that if Hossa had signed a long-term contract with the Wings, they'd have no problem with this first year of it. The subsequent years would be extremely difficult.
