Best offseason for Wings Ever?

This is really just a huge compliment to this team that Hossa would come here, for one year(no guaranteed pay) and less money than he could have gotten. It's like one of those fairy tale "I'm coming here for the cup" situations that you read on hfboards and go "if only...."

I also think this speaks volumes about his motives, like you said he could have gone to any number of teams for 8 years and 9 mil, this move will only make the character of this team as well as the skill of the team better!!!

OK so he steals Stuart for barely anything!

Grabs a very solid back up for next to nothing!

And now it appears as though he has landed Marion Hossa in a rental role for 1 yr 7.4 million.

Where are all of the Holland haters now!!!!

Constantly standing up for Ken Holland is part of what got me banned from RedWingsCentral years ago.

He's one if not the best guy in the business, maybe in all of sport. Of course this is the best organization and he has a ton of smart help around him, Jimmy D, Nill, Steve, Hakan, Bowman.

Did anyone catch Pierre McGuire going apes*** yesterday evening about how smart and great the Wings organization is? He was going ballistic about how the other league GM's are ******* idiots and how the Red Wings and Kenny just "get it". I was stunned.

Holland is superb, always has been.

GS&T I remember you and I defending him during the deadline, taking heat, sure there were others defending him as well but we took some heat for defending him!!!

This guy just understands how to build a winning hockey team, you can say Bowman or Nill or whomever else mentored him, doesn't matter! How many times do you see guys with great mentors end up being nothing compared to the mentor!!! He has full respect of the entire organization, players, coaches, ex players, front office people!!!

My question is how big of a load did Babcock just dump in his pants?

You mean I get my entire team back minus Drake and Hasek but with Hossa? Really, and you still want to pay me to be the coach I don't have to pay you?

Nothing can be as good as the 2001 offseason. That was nuts.

But this is damn good too.

Powerplay Unit 1

Zetterberg Datsyuk Hossa

Lidstrom Rafalski

DAMN!

The only reason I beg to differ is the fact that in 01 there were no salary restraints, wasn't the payroll some where near 70 million or something like that!

You can take the unlimited salary away from the man, but you can not take his abilities away. That and when you have a perennial winner in an era when everyone is supposed to be as good as each other, you have a bargaining chip. As evidence by the Hossa signing and Stuart!

This is certainly an amazing way to start things off. First Kenny re-signs Stuart to a long term deal at a reasonable price, then he signs Ty Conklin, a solid backup goaltender for much less money than I thought he would make (I figured on the open market at today's prices, and given that Conklin saved Pittsburgh last season, he'd make at least 1.5 million), and then, as if that wasn't great enough, he goes out and signs MARIAN HOSSA! The fact that he signs one of the best players in the world is good enough, but also the fact that he signs him for almost three million less than what other teams were offering him was amazing.

I'm so shocked and happy right now that words don't do justice for my excitement. Kenny Holland makes all GM's look like total idiots. The guy is flat out amazing at what he does.

This is incredible. To look at the current roster and then remember that it is not 2001, there is in fact a salary cap to prevent monster teams....

The Detroit Red Wings are officially the best team in the NHL on paper and in actuality.

Hossa deal sucks. Sundin is about 1000 times better.

I mean why make such a big deal? Stuart figured to resign, he signs for 3-4 million and is not that great a d-man anyway (remember the deadline most people were like "he's on par with Lilja") and with all the young d-man in the system, it's kind of a throwaway signing...Conklin is a 1-year stopgap that isn't even needed because Howard should be in the league this year and Osgood is "The Man" quoting 90% of the people on this board, and Hossa compares to Yashin on the heart front...best offseason ever??? Give me a break.

Kenny made an offer and he didn't respond. How can anyone sit here and say this deal sucks? We got the best free agent forward available, period, hands down, end of story.

We are going to be icing arguably the best top 6 and for sure top 4 D in the NHL in 08-09. All of this coming 1 month after the best team in hockey captured the greatest prize.

Ken Holland hockey log:

Jun 04, 2008: Win Stanley cup. Celebration ensues.

Jun 20-21, 2008: Do what my scouts say at the draft.

Jul 01, 2008: Solidify goaltending by signing best backup in the league.

Jul 01, 2008: Cement Detroit as the best defensive team in the league.

Jul 02, 2008: Ensure that Detroit also has the best offense.

Jun 03-Oct 01, 2008: Figure out what to do with all the cap space still left.

Man, the last time I felt like this was when we signed Brett Hull.

It's better! This was during the Cap Era, where as in 2001 Kenny could spend whatever he wanted. Kenny just signed one of the top coveted FA's to a freaking 1 year deal after solidifying the best defense in the league just yesterday.

Better "GMing" this offseason because of the cap. But in terms of sheer awesomeness for the fans and the holy-s***-look-who-we-just-got moments that we live for, 2001 will never be topped.

See, to me this offseason is more exciting simply because of the feat he accomplished to make it happen. I'm not saying it was easy in 2001, but what Kenny did this year is beyond amazing. I guess we'll have to call it a 1A, 1B thing.

We've had biggest offseason splashes in years past but I gotta say this was the MOST shocking (and awesome) offseason move that I can remember. I didn't check the forums 'cause I was SURE we were done after yesterday and when my buddy MSN'ed during lunch I was just like holy s***!

Sundin's also nearly 10 years older than Hossa and on his way to retirement.

If you're not satisfied with how this offseason went, you never will be.

He was probably mad the Red Wings didn't sign Eric Lindros in 2001. Hindsight...

:hysterical: That's what I was thinking. Where are all of those people who talked about how bad he sucked and we could have had Hossa at the trade deadline and he never did anything but merely inherited a good team. It cracks me up, I'll bet that there have been / are going to be a lot of Red Wings cards reissued. :hysterical:

Oly fuggin sheet, man. I've got less than 3 months to save for a new flatscreen tv and surround sound!

Holland is awesome but remember its a committee in the Red Wings office. And Illitch has created an environment and an organization that players want to be a part of. Players know a good organization when they see one. Hossa's decision is a testament to that. Nil sticking around is testament to that. Scotty Bowman sticking around is testament to that. ( I loved the shot of Yzerman and Bowman sitting up in the booth together watching game 6 of the Finals).

Yee f***in hah, baby! Another great day to be a Red Wing fan. Go Wings!

Signing Stuart to next to nothing?? Are you kidding me? He is a good physical D man but $3.75M per year? Too much. Kronwall is making $3M so when his contract is up he is gonna demand $4M+. It just sets a bad precedent thats all. Otherwise, I like bringing Hossa in for 1 year. Lose him after we repeat. Then get Zetterberg and Franzen re signed ASAP.
