Barrie 900 Report post Posted July 17, 2008 I wonder how far back in History they're going to go to make their choice. If it's only back 5-10 years, then Boston will win it. If they go back further, then it's New York. Since the 1966 Season (First year of the SuperBowl) here's the number of championships New York has won: Yankees -1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 Mets -1969, 1986 Giants -1986, 1990, 2007 Jets -1969 Rangers -1994 Islanders -1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 Knicks -1970, 1973 Compare that to Boston: Red Sox -2004, 2007 Patriots -2001, 2003, 2004 Bruins -1970, 1972 Celtics -1968, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1981, 1984, 1986, 2008 Not counting College Championships, Boston's success has been recent, where New York's is consistant. Personally I hope they go back more than the 2000's and see a bigger picture, but I won't lose any sleep over their choice. They really can't go wrong either way picking New York or Boston. Just for fun, here's how we compare: Tigers -1968, 1984 Red Wings -1997, 1998, 2002, 2008 Pistons -1989, 1990, 2004
MississippiWing 14 Report post Posted July 17, 2008 Watching the one's I have, they all seem to be more recent. Knoxville talked about UT and their football and women's basketball. Florida talked about the dual championships, and Kansas talked about the recent men's basketball title.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted July 17, 2008 Interesting observations Barrie, but what about the Devils' championships? If one includes the Giants and Jets which play in NJ, shouldn't the Devils be considered too since, until last season, they played right next door to the American football teams? So in my opinon, include the Devils or exclude the Giants and Jets. Also is it fair to include cities that sometimes have 1.5 to nearly 2 times as many teams as most other cities? #19=Legend 29 Report post Posted July 17, 2008 But I would rather Detroit be just Hockeytown, instead of titletown.
BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted July 18, 2008 I thought they picked Ann Arbor as Michigan's Title Town? Or do they do more than one city in some states? Not that I care since it's yet more pointless fluff from the so-called world wide leader in sports.
#19=Legend 29 Report post Posted July 18, 2008 Although I think the theme should have been Red Wings and not Tigers. I thought it was pretty sweet. But I dont see how they can actually put the Lions in there lol.
Opie 308 Report post Posted July 18, 2008 Not that I had a lot of vested interest in this award, label whatever it is, but they nominated Gainsville, Gainsville, you mean that town in Florida that has the University of Florida and NOTHING ELSE!!!!!

It's not just based on professional sports or national titles. They are taking into consideration all college champiomships...NCAA Div I, Div II, NAIA, whatever and also high school championships. That probably contributes to Gainsville being on there (although I really don't know that for a fact) and definitely is the reason that Valdosta, GA, Massillon, OH and my hometown of Parkersburg, WV are included. Obviously, none of these cities will win, but I do think it was a good idea by ESPN to include them as finalists to draw attention to the accomplishments of those cities. Barrie 900 Report post Posted July 18, 2008 (edited) Not that I care since it's yet more pointless fluff from the so-called world wide leader in sports. Agreed. Even though I put some comments in about who should win, I think this is pointless. What happens for example if Boston wins, and in the next 10 years their teams don't win another Championship for the city. And in the same period of time, Philly (never happen, but for example sake) wins 2 World Series, 2 NBA titles, and a Stanley Cup Final. Does Titletown go to Philadelphia? auxlepli 17 Report post Posted July 18, 2008 ... I think this is pointless. In my opinion, so is ESPN. Oh wait this whole title town thing stemmed from ESPN. Figures.
