high_stick69 7 Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Green Bay WI has been nicknamed titletown for decades. Its like another city wanting to take Hockeytown away from Detroit. Did they really need to have it copywrited? Probably not, because we all know Detroit is Hockeytown.... just like Green Bay is Titletown.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 -Bolded part: That is an unfair criteria, it is not that Foxboro isn't a nice stadium or couldn't host it, it is that the league won't put the superbowl in a cold weather outdoor stadium. TO your first point about hating rivals, look no further than this board and the Avs haters, it is not that Fans hate other teams more than there own it is that they have a strong emotional tie to there team. What city hosts a tournament is not so much a credit to their fans a lot of that has to due with were that respective sports executives want to see it hosted. Cities fight to host the Superbowl or the final four, the league then selects what they deem to be the best location as far as ease of transportation, weather, etc.... There is a lot of love for Boston sports in the media right now because they hold 2 of the 4 major championships in professional sports and had another team compete for a third. If they get docked for not winning in a century what about the cities that didn't even have teams for that long? Your post makes you sound like a bitter jealous fan, not that you are but it comes off as though you are bothered by the fact that ESPN ( of all things to bother you) is not giving your city enough credit, and to tell you the truth I could give two s***s if they award it to Detroit, Boston, or East El Paso, the awards I care about are awarded at the end of the very last game every season. ESPY's or Title town all of that s*** means squat to me, before you go thinking I think MY team's city should win. Because I root for the Wings, I don't consider myself a true Boston sports fan, in order to be that you must root for all 4 local teams trust me. They don't get to win either, obviously. And regardless of criteria for the Super Bowl, Boston has never hosted one. It's not really unfair. It's more unfair, if you're going to name a Titletown, to just give them a pass on it. We built a domed stadium, Boston didn't. Should we also give Chapel Hill a pass on never hosting a Super Bowl, just because they don't have a pro team? As for this..... TO your first point about hating rivals, look no further than this board and the Avs haters, it is not that Fans hate other teams more than there own it is that they have a strong emotional tie to there team. Sorry, this is different. Nobody in Detroit has a Wings jersey that says Avs Suck on the back instead of a name; I saw two different Red Sox jerseys with Yankees Suck on the back during just one train ride in Boston. There are Yankees Suck patches, bumper stickers, window stickers, and t-shirts. There is a yankeessuck.com, yanks-suck.com, theyankeessuck.com, and yankeessuck.net. Many teams' fans chant "Yankees Suck" when the Yankees are in town; Red Sox fans will chant "Yankees Suck" any time, any place, including during the World Series celebrations. Do a Google image search for Yankees Suck and see what you find; page after page of Yankees Suck paraphernelia. Do one for "Avs Suck" and you know what you find? "Red Wings Suck" stuff. There is passion for your team. There's hatred for other teams. Both are natural. And then there's putting that hatred above your own team. That's where Red Sox fans are. pjgj13 30 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 Obviously this "contest" isn't about the last year in sports. Don't forget about 1. The Drive's 4 titles in their 6 years of existance (2 losses in the championship game). 2. The Michigan Panthers 1st USFL title. 3. The Detroit Spirit had the 1st CBA title. 4. The Detroit Turbo had the 1st MLL title 5. The Shock's 2 titles in 3 (?) years. Add those to the Pistons, Wings & Tigers titles in the last 40 years, what city comes close? Since Ann Arbor is one of the 20 finalists, you can't count the numerous titles for U-M in football, basketball & hockey.

MississippiWing 14 Report post Posted July 8, 2008 Pittsburgh got the Titletown USA from ESPN....(WHOCARESITSESPNBLAHBLAHBLAH) But the most recent championship is the steelers, then the pens, and the pirates years ago. Detroit would definetly be titletown well theres the Wings (enough said) then theres the pistons recently, and back in the 90s. And then we could include the tigers in the 80s. Has detroit gotten titletown or not? Detroit's night is July 17th.
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted July 8, 2008 I can't imagine even ESPN, as sucky as they are (bowling, golf, and poker are amongst the top sports nowadays to them), taking Pittsburgh over New York. New York just has too many damn teams. Jets, Giants, Knicks, Yankees, Mets, Rangers, Islanders. The NBA only needs to add another team in New York and they have 2 teams with "New York" (despite a few teams who play at "home" in another city/state) for every sport.
