Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2008 How many games in a season? How many years in a decade? My math must be off. I wonder how Detroit was able to book 82 home games every year.

Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted August 8, 2008 ....Another thread on this topic? Screw whatever anyone else says. Yes, Detroit is Hockeytown, and there is no other. Next please. It was more of a "why are the critics wrong" type of thread but you know it is the offseason and there isn't much to talk about up in here.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted August 9, 2008 In all fairness, wasn't "hockeytown" just a marketing term that stuck? It's just like "don't mess with texas", that was just an anti-littering slogan that stuck. Honestly, I don't care if you're the best city in all of hockey. Maybe you are, maybe you aren't. Does it really matter? We live in a "what have you done for me lately" world and Detroit just won the cup. Therefore, making you currently the best until the next champion. Is that not enough? We Detroiters tend to have the "little brother" attitude toward our city - we'll make fun of it all we want but we'll kick the ass of anyone we find messing with it. Metaphorically speaking. Our city gets picked on a lot so when people want to take what we do have, we get touchy. And even if it was just a marketing slogan, so what? You Texans would probably be more than a little annoyed if somebody walked around going "don't mess with Oklahoma!"
Lidstrom for Norris 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2008 I hear all this mumbo jumbo about how Detroit fans aren't as loyal as Pittsburgh fans or Buffalo fans, and how the Wings don't sell out all their games and how the Wings fans are spoiled. Also, I found a video of our very own Katrina Hancock speaking to a Pittsburgh reporter on how Pittsburgh fans are so much better than Wings fans. So are we Hockeytown? Do we have the best fans? Is there a reason why we aren't selling out all our games? Please enlighten me to your opinions. Is that a serious question? I mean, Come on man. We have been the most dominant team in the NHL for the past ten years. 17 straight years of making the playoffs, which happens to be a sports history record. 4 Stanley Cups in the past 11 years and conference champions 6 of the past 7 years. The reason we dont sell out Joe Louis anymore is because we are so used to winning. We never have to worry about making the playoffs or winning the conference anymore, because we know its going to happen. If anyone ever tells you we aren't hockeytown anymore, just show them the statistics.
joshy207 156 Report post Posted August 9, 2008 Is that a serious question? I mean, Come on man. We have been the most dominant team in the NHL for the past ten years. At least that... more like 15 or 16 years... 17 straight years of making the playoffs, which happens to be a sports history record. No... St. Louis Blues at one point had made the playoffs for 26 or 27 straight years. 4 Stanley Cups in the past 11 years and conference champions 6 of the past 7 years. Playoffs, no. Do you mean regular season? The reason we dont sell out Joe Louis anymore is because we are so used to winning. And our economy sucks, and tickets are expensive, and our economy sucks. We never have to worry about making the playoffs or winning the conference anymore, because we know its going to happen. A little cocky? If anyone ever tells you we aren't hockeytown anymore, just show them the statistics. There are no statistics, Hockeytown isn't a title awarded by a panel of experts. It's a marketing slogan, nothing more, nothing less. One that can't be taken away because it's trademarked.

Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted August 14, 2008 And even if it was just a marketing slogan, so what? You Texans would probably be more than a little annoyed if somebody walked around going "don't mess with Oklahoma!" Hell yeah we would!!! We'd declare war. Seriously. You think I'm joking? Joshy, it was 25, and it will be broken by Detroit. Actually, the record for most consecutive playoff appearances in North American professional sports belongs to the Boston Bruins, at 29 years, from 67-68 to 95-96. Had Montreal not missed the postseason in 69-70 (they finished tied for 4th with NYR but lost the tiebreaker due to goals scored 244 to 246), then they would have held the record at an astonishing 46 years, from 48-49 to 93-94!
