b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Overpayment now, but I'm more than happy about the deal in the long run. There are plenty worse players signed for more and I expect paying him this kinda money will see Filppula on the second line for good, which is great. stud_defenseman 1 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) If Flip can up his production next year to between 45-50 pts he will be almost worth the money. If he can get himself up to around a 60+ pt a year player he will be well worth 3 mill a year. Can't deny that he is a good defensive player as well. I thought they would have been able to get the deal done for 2.5 though. Edited July 30, 2008 by stud_defenseman
FinWing 26 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 I'm relieved to have this stalemate dealt with, this should be a good deal a year or two down the road. Congrats to Flip on a nice paycheck.
BigTex 1 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 I'm glad we're up against the cap this year. That means we've gotten the absolute most we could have for our team. But that's not what this thread is about. It's about Flip. FEED THE MULE, FLIP!! FEEEEEEEED THE MUUUUUULE!!!!!! Oh, and Hossa too. This team is just going to be sick it's so good. Don't hate us becuase we're beautiful NHL fans. We can't help it!!
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 cap doesn't rise during the season and we never know what can happen. We could lose a star to a long term injury and then have a lot of space. The way i see it now though. It's going to be difficult to have that 'training camp battle' that Holland was talking about for the defensive spots. We sign Quincey now and it officially puts us over the cap, but because of Chelios' age, i'm fairly sure we can't take him off the cap if he retires. So he'll have to be traded if we sign him and then take him off the cap. It's difficult to work out, but chances are that we'll go into the season with a 23 man roster and be very tight to the cap. With Ericsson's cap hit you can guarantee he won't be on the roster. i think we need to trade Lilja to give us some room. Keeping Ericsson down one more season will give the Wings another $900,000 in cap room to go along with $610,000 they currently have (now including Filppula's cap hit). That means Kenny has a mere $1.51 million left to spend on 1-2 more forwards. Also, this assumes Cheli will not be on the Wings next season and that Lebda and Lilja will be. If anyone goes down, Meech can come up and if I'm doing this correctly his cap hit would be around $2,650 per day he's on the roster. That being said, I just don't see Kenny moving Lilja even though it seems to be the popular belief here. UFA sign and trade isn't a good idea for any team, and the Wings organization has shown more class than that. Lilja may be moved next year to accommodate Hossa, but I don't see it happening this year.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Thanks NFM, pulling through as usual, so I'm guesing that you think Big Rig is ready? Cause I hope so too! yeah, I think he's ready but he isn't going to be on the Wings this year, especially after today's announement. The Filppula cap hit puts the Wings $610,000 from the Cap limit (including Ericsson's Cap hit). He'll stay down another year, because he can and the Wings need him to now more than ever. This gives the Wings $1.51 million to play with in the event of injury and to add Downey or Mac.

Cruiser008 37 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Given that Flip is still just 24 it's not unreasonable to expect steady improvement over the next 5 years (barring injuries). If you break out the 5 years like this: 08-09: 2 mil 09-10: 2.5 mil 10-11: 3 mil 11-12: 3.5 mil 12-13: 4 mil then it's easy to see that the Wings are getting a guy who projects as in ideal 2nd line center for good bargain for each of the 5 years. Of course it means that we're in pretty tight next year (*cough* good-bye Lilja *cough*) but long term this is a great signing.

That being said, I just don't see Kenny moving Lilja even though it seems to be the popular belief here. UFA sign and trade isn't a good idea for any team, and the Wings organization has shown more class than practically any other. I cannot see the wings pulling a sign and trade either. One of the things that makes this team so appealing to players, well other than winning, is the way they treat their players. I said it in another thread, the only real controversy they have had over contracts was Feds, Holland pulled that year away from him and the ordeal became a mess. Other than that what mistake have they made in terms of signing and releasing players. I see Lebda or Meech being shopped if not a combo of the both. My other thought here, and I said this last season(edit at the end of the season) and during the post season, everyone sees a D-man being shopped. But with the addition of Hossa ( I obviously wasn't talking about this in the past), the growth of Mule, the emergence of Huds and Flip I think Sammy has finally reached the status so many here (not me) thought he always was, not needed. He filled a role for this team for the past couple of years when secondary scoring was a weakness. Now the team has 9 forwards that could be top 6. Package Sammy with a D-man for a prospect, or Sammy for a late round pick. Look at a team like Pho, Min he could fill in there and give them some offensive support they need, I would say LA as well but they need to spend big to make the cap floor and Sammy is cheap, too cheap won't help them where they need it most. The wings get 1.2 off of the books and the other team gets a cheap 40 point guy with an expiring contract that if they don't need him they can let him walk. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 i guess i'll be the first to say that I think this is risky So was signing Kronwall to his current deal. Look at the gem that's turning out to be. TBH, it looks like slight overpayment for this season, but this could turn out to be an absolute steal as soon as next season, and with any luck this year. alowicious 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 (edited) Seems to be a good deal overall. If he emerges this year he will be worth it and then some! Thanks Kenny! Edited July 30, 2008 by alowicious
Guest Dump-N-Thump Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Mixed emotions.. 3m is a hefty price tag, But i'm hoping the extra money gives him extra incentive to get him to the next level.. We shall see.. This deal could easily be a steal though 5y/3m is a solid contract, and with this years inflamation, im glad we could find a middle ground. Should be fun to see how he performs this year.. omnipotent_hudler 0 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 I dunno, assuming this is a 3 mil cap hit per year(?) for a guy that is solid defensively but has yet to show any real offensive spark could turn out pretty bad for us. Kronner had at least shown that he was fulfilling his potential by the time we signed him

Nev 1,085 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 I'm happy - very happy - with this deal. Everyone keeps saying how we've overpaid for him this season. Thats not true, we've overpaid for him last season, which was really his first full NHL season. For $3M we've got a solid 2-way centre - good on face-offs, good defensively, good skater, should put up 20 goals a year. As I said earlier, playing with Hossa and Mule (both in a contract year) he should put up career numbers. His biggest problem last year was consistancy. His streakiness is probly the biggest weakness in his game In 2013 I expect $3M will look like a bargain for him.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 the majority of lgw also thinks downey should be in the lineup every night Well played, but my point was that while Kronner showed potential, at the time he got his new contract he hadn't shown that he was worth it at the time. Now it looks like a steal, same as Filppula's could look by as early as the conclusion of this coming season.
Penky26 2 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 great sign and I agree with most in saying this could be a huge steal in 2 or 3 years

Yeah I hope you're right but I had a much better feeling about the Kronwall contract when it happened than about this one, to me Kronwall had shown he was worth it already and Filpulla really hasn't yet, but I'm just a fan so
BigWinston 15 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 Very happy with the new contract. Although $3mill may seem a little too much for the first year, I'm sure he could have gone to other teams for more. So this looks like yet another "home-town-discount" which I'm pleased to see.
Reds4Life 51 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 wow Filppula is not worth more than Dan Cleary. The deal seems bad now in my opinion, but it could be a steal in few years.
