So this thread got me intrigued with this whole KHL business so I looked into seeing if I could watch it. Turns out yes. Right now as of this posting there is a live game. Here are the links for anyone interested in checking it out to get you warmed up for the Wings http://www.myp2pforum.eu/nhl-icehockey/263...hl-08-09-a.html

Gotta consider the big picture, though. While players like Radulov may think they've got it made in the KHL, the fact of the matter is this: the NHL is The Big Time, and the KHL is not -- and will never be. With all that that that entails, Radulov is, despite his fatter contract, taking a big risk with his career at large by flipping off the NHL.

As Kp-Wings pointed out, the really funny thing about this story is that Radulov, for all his nationalistic, anti-NHL blathering, is a product of North American Hockey. If he thinks he's going to be "taken care of" just because he's a Russian with a thorn in his side, he could very well be in for a rude awakening.

I agree with you. His long term money making ability has been shot down the tubes probably. Especially if Bettman makes the right call and bans him from the league. However, for the short term, he comes out a winner making millions more than he would have made at the NHL level. At least for next season. With the way contracts are being handed out, he could have topped 4 million a season if he would have played for Nashville and piled up a lot of points in the last year of his contract.

But who cares. There's alot of ifs ands or buts in this situation.

Look at it from a non biased, i'm an NHL fan viewpoint.

1. He gets to go to his native country, speak his language, play in front of people who know him better. Be it family, friends, whatever.

2. He's making more now, alot more now than he was in Nashville. And I don't think they pay anything or near anything in taxes that he'd pay here.

3. He gets to be a premier name in that league vs a 2nd tier, no name here in the NHL.

Simply put, there's alot of reasons for him to want to play in Russia. Should he have bolted on his contract. I don't know. Players do that s*** all the time. Look at Steven Jackson of the Rams. SOB held out until like a week before the season started b/c he didn't want to honor his deal. And vice versa, teams have f***ed players out of money just as much. I believe the Maple Leaf deal for McCabe is being held up b/c the Leafs owe McCabe money and the Panthers don't want to get stuck paying that bonus. Players f*** over teams and teams f*** over players sometimes. So it goes.

You can't break his legs and you can't get anything good to come from him being "forced" to fulfill his contract in a place he doesn't want to. Talk about a locker room cancer for the Preds. Let the kid go. HOWEVER...the russians are always bitching that we pilfer their players and we don't provide compensation for them. OK, so now is the Russians opportunity to practice what they preach and IMO they should pay Nashville some type of compensation.

On the other hand, how many players has the NHL taken away from Russian clubs, players who had contracts to fulfill in Russia. Ever heard of Sergei Fedorov? The Wings helped him DEFECT from his team and country to come here. Did we pay any restitution to his old club? My guess is no. So if the Russian team that signed him throws a big, fat f*** you to the Preds, I don't blame them either.

Bottom line, there is no good to come of this situation. Let the kid go, wash your hands of him if you're the Preds and move on. Do a better job scouting and talking to young players from abroad in the future so hopefully you don't run into this problem again.

I'm not saying he didn't have his reasons. What I'm saying is that this isn't the clear-cut victory some people are making it out to be. Flipping off the NHL and siding with KHL, all the while spewing pro-Red Army vitriol when you're not even a product of said program, is not smart business. He may make out like a bandit for the rest of his career, but it's highly unlikely. And seeing as how he's apparently trying as hard as he can to burn his bridges with the NHL and North American Hockey at large, he can't expect to be bailed out should he hit a wall over there in Abramovich Land.

I hear what you're saying. Frankly, I don't understand this notion of winning or losing here? I don't know which poster brought that up but its ridiculous IMO.

Preds lost a good player. But they also lost a player who doesn't want to play for them.

Rads gets to go home, maybe make more money and be happier. But, he doesn't get to play in the best league with the best talent.

It's a bummer situation if you are a Preds fan but stuff like this happens. In my perfect, idealistic world all players/teams would honor contracts until they're done. No re-negotiating mid way, no hold outs, no bulls***.

And should there be a defector, then a team should receive some type of compensation, not from the league as I don't think that's fair. But monetary from the team that took your player sounds fair to me. Heck, the Russians have been whining about that for years.

There's no big winner or loser here and I don't know why people are looking at it like that.
