Accomplishing things in the face of adversity like addiction and other personal problems takes a strong will, a lot of guys would have given up and been bagging crap at wal mart by now. But he went out there and worked his way back financially, mentally, and on the ice. Nothing but respect for that kind of effort.

Excellent article. Darren has always been one of my favorite Wings. When i was 6 and 7, I started to love the Beatles, and D-Mac was my favorite Red Wing because his name sounded like Paul McCartney. And when he reached over the glass and handed me a puck during warmups of my first Red Wings game back in St. Louis in 1999, his place as one of my all time favorites was cemented.

The kids do a little math and figure that at the rate the rings of the Cup are swapped out to make room for new names, they will be in their 70s when their father's name disappears from the Cup. When you're nine or 10, that's a lifetime.

I doubt it. I read everything Mac-related I can get my eyeballs on (take that, you homer-haters!) and I haven't read anything yet about eating ice cream from the Cup or about his kid getting a hair cut.

The part about Lemioux sounded familiar though. I think I read the book, or saw the video... or something.

Great article. I'm all choked up. How great it must be for his kids to have him back as their dad again! He is an inspiration to all who deal with personal demons.

It's pretty much as much of a girl's name as Valeri Zelepukin, Valeri Bure, Jody Shelley, Stacy Keach (even threw a non-hockey one there) are guy's names. It can all go either way I guess.

Speaking of Zelepukin, I remember how great he was in the old mid-90's hockey games. He was always one of my leading scorers.
