FunkedUp 29 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/index.ssf?/...chigan#continue DETROIT (AP) — Darren McCarty will return for his 13th season with the Detroit Red Wings after agreeing to terms of a one-year contract. Red Wings general manager Ken Holland announced the deal with the 36-year-old McCarty on Wednesday night. McCarty re-signed with Detroit in February after playing two seasons with Calgary. McCarty has been a fan favorite in Detroit, where the physical forward helped the Red Wings win the Stanley Cup in 1997, 1998, 2002 and last season. He has 126 goals and 161 assists in his NHL career.
miller76 463 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 I have no problem with that. I like the guy. I know he isn't as effective as he once was, but I think he will contribute more then we expect him to.
Booster313 138 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 Good for Mac...the best part is he only plays if he earns it. I have faith that he will.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 Great news. Mac did above what we all expected of him. Toward the end of the run he was too slow to keep up, but he was fine until then. I say it's a good move. He'll be in better shape, and he's solid in the role he's found. And who knows, he may even surprise us by getting a little of hsi scoring touch back. He had flashes of it last season, moreso than Downey (but I'm glad we got Downey back, too), so I think he brings a little more to the table than Downey theoretically. GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 Great news. It'll be great to see McCarty and Downey pushing each other all year and protecting our guys. I hope they don't have to do their protecting from the press box.
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 As long as the deal mirrors Downey's, I'm thrilled with it. You can never have too much depth when it doesn't count against your cap unless called upon. Hopefully Mac can shake the awful Dallas series he had last postseason and get back into a rhythm of consistent play.
Icer 0 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 I bet he spends most of the season in GR.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 In terms of being role players...Downey>Mac. So heres to hoping Mac has a good time in GR, where he can play good minutes and be the veteran leader they need to do well.

Opie 308 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 I hope they don't have to do their protecting from the press box. That is my worry also.....but I think Bab's is smart enough to have at least one of them in or up. How is this any different from last season, other than the fact it is two part time enforcers/fighters. Last year it was Downey in and out based on injuries, what did he do from the press box on the games he didn't play? Babs seem to fit Downey in fine last year and I assume it will be the same situation he will have 1 enforcer/fighter up at all times and use it when he needs to, the difference is that once in a while the name will change. MidMichSteve 1,115 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darren_McCarty I look for McCarty to be better this season then he was when he went to Calgary. He is motivated now and IF he stays away from the party scene and concentrates on getting into shape he may have an excellent season. Remember he is still a young man (36). His is a great story and this old-timer wishes him the best of luck.
55fan 5,133 Report post Posted September 19, 2008 I'm tickled. Whether he ends up playing more with the Wings or in GR, he has made great strides with his life, and I hope he continues. I'm proud of him for what he has done. I really hope I get to see a lot of him in the Winged Wheel, but I realize that this hope may not be in touch with reality. On the other hand, the sky in my world is a nice shade of burnt sienna. Or maybe raw umber....
T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted September 25, 2008 (edited) Yeah, this is a little late. I was just surfing the Flames forum to see how they were welcoming Bertuzzi, and came across this McCarty signing thread. They bascially had a couple good things to say. http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthread.php?t=62890 Edited September 25, 2008 by T.Low
droppinthegloves 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2008 My wife and I got a chance to play poker with Mac last weekend in TC at the casino. I was sitting next to him, so I talked to him for about 45 minutes. He said he is really excited to be back again and ready to make another run. He said Hossa has been a great motivator as well. Mac was kind enough to sign my wifes jersey too. We knew they were in TC and figured we may see somebody at the casino, so she wore her McCarty jersey. When we got there, we were standing at the bar when a guy walked up and told us McCarty was playing a slot right around the corner. I walked over and asked if it would be any trouble to sign my wifes jersey. He said "Not at all". I told him I needed to grab a pen, but he said he had a marker on him. She was thrilled. We thanked him and he shook both of our hands. Later we again met up with him at the tables. Darren was a good sport and fun to chat with. I wished all athletes could respond the way he did. I guess Liddy was there too, but we never got a chance to see him. We did see Homer at a bar downtown that night though.

droppinthegloves 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2008 So he was gambling in a casino? Ack..... LOL... I know. But when we saw him at the slots, it was at least a penny machine. And at the tables, it was only a $1-2. He did win a couple hundred from what I saw. To be honest, I'm sure the casino up there gives players money to play anywho. I know they did that in Mt. Pleasant. He was playing small ball, then left fairly early and said it was time to bail. If it's any consolation, he was only drinking tea with lemon. Again, it was just fun to see him. I've always liked the guy a ton and am glad he's back on the team. And for the record, I only wanted to say that he was very sociable and kind and I wished all players could represent their teams the way he was. So he likes to gamble... I do too, which is why I was there. Winner-winner, chicken dinner

I do too, which is why I was there. Winner-winner, chicken dinner I like to gamble to, but it's different for you and I because we're not addicts. The fact that he was playing low stakes doesn't make it better because of the way addiction works. I'm thrilled to hear he's staying away from drinking because thats half his battle, but the problem with addicts is that most of them justify what they are doing. In Macs case, I can see it starting off with him justifying that he's not drinking so its ok to indulge in low-limit gambling. After a while, low-limit gambling doesn't do it for him and perhaps he starts gambling higher amounts. Then a while later that doesn't do it, and he picks up a bottle. I'm not saying all this will happen, nor am I criticizing addicts. I have someone that is extremely close to me that has struggled with addiction for the past 7 years, and I've seen how that disease works and the mindset addicts take on. I sure hope Mac takes a step back and thinks about what he's doing because low-limit gambling is the first step in the wrong direction.
