Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 28, 2008 Why is Maltby out there on the PK? The first PK meanwhile... And this might be controversial but I think Cleary is expendable.

Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted October 28, 2008 True. I'd argue that Helm and Abdelkader are superior to Maltby and Draper right now though. The only reason they're still playing is because of our loyalty and the fact they'll be needed come playoff time. I'd also say because they know the system. These young guys have GREAT energy and bring tons of excitement, but they need to get the system down better and they will be mainstays when they do so. Ehh, Clearys got the eye injury thing going on thats really hampered his vision on the ice. If he gets over that, he could be back to his normal self. Hes been friggin deadly on the PK, though. Surely the way to "get the system down better" is to play? And I just realised, Cleary is signed for a further 4 years after this year, the last 3 being at $3million per season! Overpayment or what! These young guys have GREAT energy and bring tons of excitement, but they need to get the system down better and they will be mainstays when they do so. On the other hand, theres no way they can get that experience unless they can play. Abdelkader is one thing, but Helm knows our system by now. Hes played in the regular season, the playoffs, practiced with the team, and stayed as long as possible through training camp. Guys like Leino and Abs I can understand, but Helm already knows our business. Ideally though, the Wings would go after a solid vet that can pump up our 4th line - a guy like Ott or Nichol on our 4th line would be awesome and would be the type to make guys like Draper and Maltby elevate their game. Its one thing to be outrun by a youngster, but its another thing entirely when you're being outdone by a guy your own age - Can't blame that on rookie excitement. The 4th line very much needs a Drakian injection/contagion.

Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 28, 2008 (edited) Not controversial. Just wrong. Fair enough. He's a good fit for this team, can score as well as playing good defence, but perhaps not quite worth what he's getting paid. But hey, I've got nothing against him and I'm more than happy for him to be here. I think he's referring to that it's no fun when you're not playing Yeah, he's said he liked it here and we had a great group of guys. And I just realised, Cleary is signed for a further 4 years after this year, the last 3 being at $3million per season! Overpayment or what! At the time he signed the contract it seemed like a steal for how he played and how important he was to the team, but since then he has a couple of injuries that seems to have shaken his confidence to none and with the improving play of Filppula and the emergence of Franzenstein, coupled with the fact we have Leino, Helm, Abdelcader, Ritola all waiting in the minors who could play at the NHL level now, it surely does make that large contract of Cleary expendable, especially considering Clearys dismall offensive showings. He has been playing OUTSTANDING defense, simply outstanding work, but the fact he only has 4 points and is a -4 is what makes him expendable.

hokike 1 Report post Posted October 28, 2008 I dunno why so many assume that grass is greener on the other side of fence. From where fans take that somwhere in team's bench are better players in waiting?? The fact is that you play with thouse you have and you have to live with that... Give this player a chance, I want to see that guy....Sry but coach sees those guys every day in practice and his work is not to showcase players to whining fans This is a response to those who always demand to see GR guys or demand trades... It's early yet, but remember that he's had two 40 point seasons. If he stays healthy, he could put up more. He's defensively responsible, and he's not afraid to go into corners. I'm not totally up on the relative value of contracts, but 2.5 mill for 40+ points and a good two-way forward seem reasonable.
