Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted October 30, 2008 He was hardly "destroyed". Ryan Hollweg on the other hand... Yeah. How about Mike Rupp. Man, for years he was just a big guy that didn't really do a whole lot of anything. But the last 2-3 seasons, he's really gotten to be a decent heavyweight. He's not in that upper tier but he's a reliable heavyweight and has fought guys like Godard, Ivanans, Cote, etc... He's really made a niche for himself there with Cam Janssen gone and David Clarkson more of a middleweight (although Clarkie is one of the best pound for pounders going right now). This is a classic example of the arguments over fighting and deterence. You can't stop Hollweg from throwing that hit and you aren't going to stop him the next game from throwing that hit. But you sure as hell can take him out of a game if you give him a solid beat down like Rupp did.
Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted October 30, 2008 Give Mac a few fights to get back in the swing of things. Win or loss in the fight, he did his job. I think he is less of a defensive liability when he is on the ice than Downey. Mac isn't what he used to be, but he is still a better hockey player than Downey. I totally agree. My opinion that May one the fight is based on him landing one punch that basically decided how that fight was going to go. Mac didn't really hang in there all too well and ended up on his can. But Mac and May fight that battle 10 times, Mac is going to win 5 of those. He didn't get destroyed. He didn't even lose outright. Saying he "won" or "lost" was technical in this bout as it wasn't much of a fight. But mad props to Mac for dropping the mits and being a willing participant in visiting ice against one of the biggest, toughest teams in the NHL. Win, lose or draw I love to see any Wings player toss the gloves and fight. Props to Samuelsson as well. I don't think he punched Perry so much for the hit on Kronner rather more as retaliation for Perry giving him a light pop on the cheek right before that. But i'll take that penalty early in the season. A jerk like Perry pops you one, drill him right back in the face.
BigTex 1 Report post Posted October 30, 2008 My response is this: We shouldn't even be having this discussion. For a team like the Wings that is top notch on everything else, why in the world do we have an average enforcer!? It's not like enforcers take a big cap hit. Why not just trade for one, I'm sure we wouldn't have to give up much? Or just draft a guy who is clearly built for this kind of work? I think D-Mac's story and revival has been great. Love the guy. But, enforcers have a much shorter shelf life than other types of players. No reason to extend this out any longer than it already has.
The Mule 0 Report post Posted October 30, 2008 Hollweg is a bit of an idiot, but a part of me has a ton of respect for the guy. I don't respect him from for any of the cheap shots he has delivered in the past, but more so for the fact that even though he is a terrible, terrible fighter (which he knows he is), he rarely hesitates to drop the gloves with any opponent. The guy has balls, I'll give him that.
Lamothe 5 Report post Posted October 30, 2008 (edited) I don't "personally" believe Mac is washed up, particularly since he still has some assests to contribute to the team. However, I honestly have a hard time accepting the fact that he has a roster spot over Leino and Helm, both of which bring significantly more to the table than McCarty. I love Darren and I always will, but following this year... I believe its going to be time to call it quits, or accept a spot as the 13th or 14th forward (Depending on the roster situation in 09-10). I absolutely love Downey for his fighting ability, however I also cannot see why he is a player that leaves so much to be desired as to be dressed nearly every night. I also was not impressed in the preseason when he just blew off Peters. I know, I know. It was just preseason. No harsh judgements overall, but I just don't think hes the answer to the big question either. I believe both Downey and McCarty have the ability to tie down a 13th or 14th forward roster spot here, but Mac simply has the better skating ability and overall skill that got him the last spot. Downey is the better enforcer, but playing 3 minutes a night on a team like this isn't exactly what I'd want to see, personally. I'd rather have someone who could contribute in all areas. Still, I can't say I'd take Mac over Leino either... Particularly since the clause in Leino's contract that allows him to return to Finland if hes not in the NHL in 2-3 months sincerely scares me. What this comes down to is the fact that Detroit does not possess a power forward, such as the likes of the old school McCarty and Shanahan. I feel that we need someone who can put up 20-40 points a season with 10 fights and 150 or so penalty minutes. Someone who sticks up for his team night after night, but can also contribute and play 10 minutes or so a game. 20 points at 10 minutes game over the entire season isn't much to ask, I don't think. So, where do we find such a player? Do they really even exist anymore? Just my two cents. Edited October 30, 2008 by Lamothe

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 Haha, we finally get in a fight, and people want McCarty sent down for it. This forum blows my mind sometimes. I was glad someone finally stepped up to the plate and did something about it. You dont fight to win, you fight to send a message. The Wings dont even remember what a fight is like, last one came in the 2nd round of the playoffs. I'd much rather have McCarty and Downey playing, but this will never happen, so even when the fighter loses, fans that feel the way I do about the game, still win. redwing_sparty 0 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 there basically wasnt a fight. a couple missed punches and some wrestling. there is nothing to that "fight". i'll wait for a real bout before passing judgement on mac
Booster313 138 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 I think that it was no worse than 90% of Downey's fights last year. It was a crappy fight, if you had to pick a winner it would be May for sure. I am not willing to write D-mac off yet, espically when I saw the alternative fight last year.
uk_redwing 495 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 (edited) I think that it was no worse than 90% of Downey's fights last year. Really? Lets see...Downey had 10 fights. So if I post them all then only 1 fight will be good? Win Downey. Draw Draw Draw Win Downey. Win Downey. Win Downey. Theres 7 fights right there that make Mac look as washed up as they come. I cba finding the others. Edited October 31, 2008 by uk_redwing
ManLuv4Clears 7 Report post Posted October 31, 2008 Theres 7 fights right there that make Mac look as washed up as they come. I cba finding the others. I have to agree with you UK, Mac is washed up. Nothing against him personally, and I respect and appreciate what he has done for this organization, but he's not a fighter anymore. I haven't seen anything positive from him on the fighting side of things since he came to GR last year. He came close to getting his ass handed to him by an even more washed up May. Those fights that UK posted tell the enforcer tale: Downey > Mac.
