Rangers seeking additional draft pick

If the rule applies to injured plays, then it should apply in this case. If you're talking about signing a dead player, or some wierd ridiculous loop hole, then forget it.

the smith thing is whole-lot-to-do about nothing.

the question is did the rangers know about his condition before they drafted him if they did then no way should they get compensation for it, but if they didn't and the nhl knows for a fact they didn't then I think they should

this disgusts me. they actually said "...with all due respect to Alexei's family and his memory, he is technically eligible to be drafted again next year." No he's not, the poor kid isn't quite so lucky...

Technically, it's not a loophole. If you don't sign your 1st round pick and he becomes a UFA or re-enters the draft, the team gets a compensatory pick. Phoenix got one this past draft for losing Blake Wheeler.

Rangers are just making sure that they get the compensatory pick for losing a 1st rounder. Probably a little soon to be doing that, but nonetheless, they're covering their asses.

By the way, the compensation for losing a first rounder is a draft pick 30 picks lower than the spot at which the unsigned player was drafted. Rangers would get a 2nd round pick.

Absolutely Classless...That is about all I have to say.

I thought the same thing initially, but I really don't think its that big a deal. I don't know why they put out a press release about it though. It seems like they could have gotten it done quietly. Either way, Im sure its the last thing Cheraponov's family cares about right now.

They are eligible for a pick if he becomes a UFA or eligible to be drafted, he can do neither because sadly he is not alive.

That is why #1 they shouldn't be eligible. and #2 they show no class in attempting to do so.

They are eligible for compensation if they are not able to sign their 1st round pick, which they will not be able to do, for obvious reasons.

They will likely get a 2nd round pick out of it.

To me, whether they are right in doing this or not (they can have the draft pick as far as I care), but the way they argued their case is pretty disgusting. This line is what seals it as disgusting to me: "...with all due respect to Alexei's family and his memory, he is technically eligible to be drafted again next year."

The guy is dead, he can't play. The unexpected happened and the Rangers lost a great player - they deserve at least something to replace such great talent. They have an organization to run. The only thing I see wrong with this situation was how the Ranger's worded their problem and how it sounds completely rude to the Cherepanov family.

Isn't this considered a risk you take in drafting a player?

Should we compensate all teams who's prospects never play in the NHL?

Well here's the difference. The prospects got a chance to prove whether or not they were fit for the NHL. Sadly, Cherepanov didn't..

They shouldn't get it back. Things happen, for one reason or another, and there should be no "insurance" about losing a player. This is simply the things that happen in life.

Maybe the NHL will look in to a rule like that for the future.

Uh, technically, no he isn't :(

Having said that, they probly should get some form of compensation.

I would imagine that there is no rule against drafting dead players. So, technically, he probably is eligible to be drafted again next year.
