revel#13 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 I just had to throw this out, because I noticed it last year and thought it may have been a fluke. But Murphy has continued this year, even at a higher exaggerated level. Not that he is that great at commentary, but man it is becoming sickening. It seems Larry Murphy has become a yes man to Bettman and the NHL. I know he working directly for the NHL on their NHL TV network but come on. When garbage penalties are called and they are blatant make-up calls or just plain "New"NHL calls, he not only points out why the call "seemed" to be legit but always agrees with call, even when it is insanely bogus. Watching games that are played away from home and not having Mickey becomes difficult to to watch and have to listen to him. They need to find someone else when Mikey does not want to travel. Even when he is "between the benches" his comments are usally annoying and useless. He even attempts to even lick Bettman's ass and get a few words in why the crappy penalty was called. We will see tonight if I am wrong or not. What does everyone else think...?
egroen 384 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 I think Murphy is "fine". He's no Redmond, but who could be? (... maybe Chelios when he retires in ten years?) I'd say Murphy is a bit too politically correct at times, and he makes Ken Daniels look like a flaming homer, which is funny, because Redmond makes Ken Daniels look incredibly even keel. I remember the goal Anaheim scored in overtime where numerous pictures have now shown it was above the cross bar -- Daniels said it was above and Murphy said it wasn't. Yeah, that's annoying, but at least Murphy has some interesting anecdotes from time to time.

umredwing11 2 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) I find him most annoying during our home games. Mickey and Ken are doing the broadcast and then every so often a third ghost voice--aka Larry Murphy--will come in with some lame comment from ice level. When Ken and Mickey are there, I just find Murphy unnecessary. On the road I find him less annoying, but I often am in disbelief at how much he tends to compliment the other team. I know he might just be trying to level out the homerism that Ken Daniels sometimes has, but often it is ridiculous. Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) I find Murphy so annoying. I dread away games, knowing that he will be the broadcasting. He is so cautious about criticizing a call, player. ref. Whereas Redmond and Daniels call it like it is. Just my opinion, but I don't like him as a broadcaster. If I hear him say Johnny on the Spot one more time I am going to scream Edited November 17, 2008 by Wings_Rule_1010

Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Larry Murphy is a favorite in my apartment, because of his goofy antics and ridiculous statements. "Well you know what they always say, the team who gets the best player wins the trade!" "Back in my day, we'd give 'em the ol' stick-in-the-ear!" Not to mention all his advice that he gives to the Berkley kids. Especially the checking drill, where the goalie had to take part as well. This s*** is gold
Guest Shoreline Report post Posted November 17, 2008 (edited) He wouldn't influence me any more to watch Wings games than I already do. Hell, I had already contemplated putting ALL games on mute. Maybe have a reason to now. Edited November 17, 2008 by Shoreline
revel#13 0 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Well see that is reassuring. I was hoping I was not the only one feeling like this guy should just either give up or go to the NHL network. He is already in love with them. I totally agree with his corny "how to play hockey" videos.
Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted November 17, 2008 I like this thread. I agree, these 'new yes men' announcers are tough to take. What ever happen to the Don Cherry's of the World... Mickey's even biting his tongue a lot for him, it must be hard for him to see the game being ruined by awful over penalized games.
auxlepli 17 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 I couldn't care less. Announcers can be annoying at times, but I don't have any grief with Ken Kal or Paul Woods. Those guys are golden. Still and yet, there seems to be a lot of complaining about the game and about a lot of little things surrounding the game. Tweaks can be made to improve the NHL-game, but this is a great time to be an NHL fan in my opinion. Overall things are better now than they were when I first started watching. VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted November 17, 2008 Murphy is improving a bit. He's not great but I can tolerate him now. I vote for Cheli to take up a commentary job. I could easily see him becomign the next Mick.

stormboy 47 Report post Posted November 18, 2008 i don't mind murph. don't get me wrong here -- i love mickey, but look...we know you disagree with how penalties are called now. i don't know why he can't just say, "yep, 'nother chinsey call" and leave it at that (aside from maybe the most glaring). but it seems like he has to go on a four minute rant every single time a penalty is called. to his credit, he does argue the case for opposing players when they get called for weak stuff, albeit in a much weaker fashion, but it's getting a little old. but, yeah, i'd still take mickey over murph, but i'm guessing that the FSN higher ups want murph to be a little more objective. i personally think it makes a better broadcast when the announcers have some degree of disagreement instead of just jerking each other off the whole time about how great their team is and how s***ty the refs are. isn't that why we hate other announcers? just a thought. cirov19 1 Report post Posted November 18, 2008 Larry Murphy is no super announcer... he's not even a good announcer, but he's not a bad one either. What he is though, is, funny as s***. The things he says sometimes... lol. Still though, I would have to say he doesn't really state anything but the obvious.
