If you are right and Holland does give Sammy $3 million, I'll eat crow. However, if Holland doesn't do what you think and doesn't sign Sammy for $3 million (like you hope he will do) will you eat crow?

I've been a hockey fan long enough to know that some/other GMs overpay players way too much... Holland has been a much smarter and conscious GM. Look at his track record. Marty Lapointe comes to mind.

I must be the minority here that thinks $3 million is too much for Sammy. To each of their own. We'll soon see how bad Holland wants Sammy

I don't think Sammy is worth 3 million a year. For that price, I would rather keep Hudler. If Sammy comes for 2 million or less, let Huds go and take the draft pick(s). If not, re-sign Huds as he is younger and has more upside. The only thing Sammy has that Huds doesn't is a right handed shot.

Z is going to make more than Datsyuk and probably Lidstrom. I don't think anything under seven million per season is even a realistic number for Z.

Agreed. Many people seem to think he won't get a penny more than Dats. It's not that he's worth more, it's about the timing of the contracts. If Datsyuk and Z were re-signing at the same time, they probably would get the same amount, but honestly Dats would command more than what he's getting paid right now. I'd be surprised if Zetterberg agreed to $6.7. I guess the cap hit could get close to that number if he signs long term and the last few years really fall of in salary. I can never remember the exact rules on that in the CBA though.

Some are predicting the cap will go down, if this is true, that would mean GMs all across the NHL would need to tighten up and be more conservative how they write up contracts. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, the economy and lower cap is going to dictate the next term of contracts.

Hypothetically speaking, I doubt Filppula would get his $3 mil, dats his $6.7 or Kronwall get's his contract in times like these. But who knows...

I think 6.7 - 7 mil is VERY realistic for Zetterberg on a Red Wings roster due to the circumstances.

That's a good point. I forgot about the cap potentially going down.

Still, a lot of people seem to think that Z won't get more than Dats based on their abilities or value to the team, and it's about more than that.

It is hard to imagine what the team will look like next year when you take into consideration that the cap will not change much. Have the GM's been handing out contracts that in some cases are not cap smart? Yes. I think that some Gms have been taking it for granted that the cap will continue to go up and some players are being over paid. The reality is that if the cap is going to be the same or close for the next few years or longer ( depending on the economy) the next round of contracts will be much different then in the past. For example Zetterburg may have to take less money then he would have got last year simply because there will be less money to spend in the next few years. Is this fair?????? Hard to say but it is the reality of a salery cap league. I am guessing that Mr. Holland will put out the best team he can for the money.

The reductiuon in salaries following the lockout was a one-time thing, so if the cap lowers, GMs are left to deal with it on their own.

When Datsyuk signed in April of 2007, the cap was at $44 million, IE. his salary was 15.2% of the overall salary cap. Since then, Zetterberg has accomplished more than Datsyuk at the time of Datsyuk's signing (Conn Smythe, nominated for the Selke and over 90 points). 15.2% of today's salary ($56.7 million) is $8.6 million -- given Zetterberg's greater accomplishments currently, anything under $9 million from Holland would be considered a Home-Town Discount. And some of you think he will sign for $6.7 million???

I swear, there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans when these contracts finally get inked out and we see how many players leave. So many fans live in a fairey-tale land.

Reality about Hudler:

Hudler is considerably outperforming Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Filppula's performances at the same age as only Datsyuk comes close offensively, but Dats was considerably behind the other three defensively at the time. Hudler is a step behind Flip and Z defensively as a 25-year-old, but is still better than average defensively.

Hudler is well on pace to become a serious all-star in the league without having to get paid like one, and with the attitude he has shown, it doesn't seem like he'll demand too much cash. Hopefully he keeps up the pace and can be a star without needing the giant paycheck.
