Osgood is pissed off

Listen to the audio clip at the bottom. Mlive

How do I know that Osgood sounded grumpy? I updated an earlier post with an audio clip from WXYT that was posted to their website around "drive time," and whoever wanted to get a soundbyte thankfully let the digital recorder roll. Osgood speaks to the press for over five minutes, and you can hear the frustration build in his voice--a frustration that builds without provokation--as he continues to discuss his situation.

St. James deserves hazard pay for bluntly asking him about bad performances, and, again, it's Osgood who gets peeved, first at the commentary, and then his own play. You can practically hear his body language as he starts to fiddle with his equipment, undoing pad straps and tape before settling down.

It's good to hear him get angry before he returns to his calm self. He unwittingly proves to anyone who doubts him that the passion's still there--it's just the execution that's been off, and only off on a "so far" basis.

If he answered the question once, twice, hey even three times a lady (Helen) then why should he have to answer it 5 more times worded a different way.

Poor journalism is as much to blame for the vanilla answers as the players are. No longer do journalists report on the actual event, more often than not what passes for Journalism these days is just the tabloids spilling over into mainstream press.

Ozzie is usually good for a sound bite or two, that sound bite was stupid, he didn't even get that pissed off, he sounded annoyed as all hell.

But if you and I were talking and this was how the conversation went wouldn't you be pissed at me:

Opie: "Hey how's it going"

You: "Not bad not bad"

Opie " Hows things man"

You: "doing alright"

Opie: "You doing good?"

You: "yeah I am alright"

Opie: "You feeling ok"

You: "Yeah I am good"

Opie: "hows life treating you"

You: "For Fuc*$ sake I am fine move on"

It is technically a different question every goddamn time, just worded differently.

like i have always said-ozzy should not have to play well. our defense is off this year. i would have thought fans would get off his sack after bringing home the cup last year....guess not. give the captain the same treatment.

St. James simply asked the same question for every 3 goal game Ozzies has this year. I see no problem with that.

If he didn't suck he wouldn't be asked such questions.

Listen, I agree ask the tough question and he should answer, and he did, more than once.

He even went so far as to explain that everything is being done the same as last year, working on foot speed, drills, blah blah blah and even saying you are looking for something that isn't there. And then the next Jack ass proceeds to ask the same exact question.

Dumb reporters!

Question asked multiple ways and answered multiple ways!~

Why do people keep repeating this? Our defense was off early in the year but as of right now we are 3rd in the league in shots against. We were about 20th. The defense has improved but the goaltending hasn't.

Hey guys, remember last playoffs when we were up against the preds and the series were tied 2-2 because Hasek wasn't really playing his best and the wings weren't playing too great as a team? Then Ozzy came stepped up brought a much needed calm presence on the team and went all the way till we won the cup? Yeah that was awesome

Play better and no one will ask you difficult questions.

Waaaaait a minute.....that sneaky little....

Has Oz been going behind everyone's back, playing Games while nobody's watching? No? You mean, he hasn't played in a Game since he gave up those 5 goals in the Win against the 'Nuckies?

Oh. Well then....

Might want to give the guy a chance to "Play better" by actually, well....you know.... PLAYING ....before making that comment.

Just a thought.

Oh, I'm sorry...I forgot that the single game you used as your example was Osgood's only poor play this season. It's not like he's played horribly in numerous other games this season. And surely he didn't let in ANOTHER CENTER ICE GOAL against the blue jackets?

No, you're right, Osgood just had that one bad game and no one should ever question him about it. My mistake.

Edit: Oh and I almost forgot about him letting in goals on the first shot against in both of his last two starts?

People have a right to criticize Ozzie. He's the number one goalie on the team that has the most expectations, and he's not played well at all. The Wings and Lions don't have the same expectations, thus no one should make that comparison.

Ozzie is lucky he doesn't play in Montreal or Toronto, because then he'd have sportswriters up his a** all day.

teh wings aren't expected to make it out of the first round and the Lions aren't expected to make it to the first round every year... its almost the same outcome

Maybe him losing his cool is what's causing this whole thing. We've all been praising his "rebirth" as a cool-headed, unshakeable force. This season, he seems to get frustrated, which affects his play. He needs to go chill out somewhere and I hope he can collect himself again.

I would be annoyed, too, but it is good to remember just how amazing he was because he was level-headed.

I've got to agree with this. They say the 2 hardest jobs in Detroit are being a Red Wings' goalie and a Lions' QB. The media needs to go give s*** to the latter and figure out why the Lions are making Detroit more of a national joke than it already is.

For clarification, I never said that.

Your comment was "Play better and no one will ask you difficult questions." The difficult questions to which you refer, those which are causing Oz to get "pissy", (as it were), were asked after practice.....yesterday.

Again...for clarification purposes.....

In order to "Play better...", he's going to have to play. Period. No two ways about it.

And surely he didn't let in ANOTHER CENTER ICE GOAL against the blue jackets?

Damn...you're right. I'd forgotten about that one. Remind me, please....

That blast from the neutral zone that blew by him like he wasn't even there was the game winning goal. Right? No?

It must've counted for two goals against on the scoreboard, then. Oh... it didn't?

Well then, surely the Wings lost Style Points in the standings? No?

Well then, kindly advise as to how that goal had any more impact than any other goal scored that game. Other than for aesthetic purposes, of course. Because we all know how important those goals are. Right? After all, that flip in from center ice that Marty Brodeur knocked into his own net in the Stanely Cup Finals against Anaheim in 2003 is the goal that ended up costing New Jersey the Cup that year....

No, you're right, Osgood just had that one bad game and no one should ever question him about it. My mistake.

He hasn't played great. He also hasn't played as badly as his stats indicate.

Edit: Oh and I almost forgot about him letting in goals on the first shot against in both of his last two starts?

Three words:

Scoreboard and

Overall Record

He'll get it turned around. Relax.

So your conclusion is that Osgood can play as poorly as he has as long as we win? Does the horrible, embarrassing, inexcusable center ice goal not count because it wasn't the game winner? I'm hardly one of these people that says "Osgood sucks! get him off the team", but realistically his play has been poor and he should answer for it.

My point is that Osgood is NOT AT ALL playing up to par to be the starting goaltender for one of the top teams in the NHL. I'll leave this thread with the quote that summed up the last Osgood thread, from Bruce MacLeod:

"Coach Mike Babcock is obviously fed up with his team's goaltending and he should be. Three straight games giving up a goal on the first shot against ... that alone would be bad. But tonight, the fat rebounds, the lack of hugging the post, the soft outside goals. The goaltending is so bad that it makes you forget about how soft the team defense was. If either Conklin or Osgood gets hot, Babcock will ride them."

I think the problem with Ozzie IS that it doesn't matter to him. It SHOULD matter to him. He should be PISSED he's not playing well, which SHOULD drive to him exceed. That's what was great about dom, aside from his talent and athleticism, he was HUGELY competitive. He was more mad than anyone when he played bad, with Ozzie it seems to be the opposite.
