Slave 31 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 As much as it pains me to say it, I think the wings might need to get absolutely smashed, like 10-1 by the sharks on thursday. I have no idea why they are playing as bad as they are with the talent they got, but do guys think it might be best of we get obliterated by some team in the near future? it might help the team realize that they can not get by with just the names on the back of the jersey and they have to play like team like they did last year. The Secret 304 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 I think the wake up call you are looking for has to come from within each individual player to challenge himself to be better then he is right now. That has to happen to everyone now rather then after getting hammered which may work to the opposite.

I agree. Even when we have been winning I have been frustrated with the Wings. It just seems to be a lack of effort during stretches of the game. I was at the Wings / Stars game last Friday and took 3 non-hockey people with me and throughout the 1st and and most of the 2nd periods they kept asking why it looked like the wings weren't trying very hard. Then in the latter half of the 2nd and the 3rd they they tore it up. They kept asking why they didn't play like that the whole time. One of the guys who is a basketball fan asked if it was like the last few years when Jordan and the Bulls would coast through the game and then turn it on at the end - too many playoffs and age catching up with them - I told him probably a little but I hoped not because it sure was a bad habit for them to get into. I know most of the guys haven't played as good as they can, which has led to some really bad plays and breaks (like the first two goals last night) but it seems like it is more a problem of effort than it is a problem with being better. That may seem like splitting hairs but one thing they can change instantly is effort and then work on the better play. From what I've seen we could be dominating games with just sustained effort for 60 minutes.

If we can then get it to playing well for a 60 minutes each night then we can start dominating but I will setting for everyone putting in their time conistently for now and elevating from there. seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 What would be even better would be a 14-3 win to give a little bit of confidence.
HOCKEY MATTERS 167 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 The Wings passing has been very weak a lot. Way out in front, behind so the forward man has to try and bring it up through his feet, and worst of all, s***ty passing in our zone causing the now unsurprising turn-over. Defense is a bunch of pylons that on too many occasions can't clear the zone on the pk, which may or not be part of the goals against total. Our lack of physical contact is annoying, too. If they're going to take bulls*** calls, at least take some that involve hits. (don't even go to the enforcer angle....that's not what i'm saying here). All star cast that can't seem to remember how to scratch thier butts. As fans we are frustrated as I'm sure the team is too. Yeah, something has got to happen to get the boys firing on all 6 cylinders. Maybe the loss to the Av's was enough. It may take them getting blown out though. I hope the turnaround happens soon. When they are playing well it's easier to stomach the Zebra attempt to influence the outcome.
Holmstrom96 347 Report post Posted December 16, 2008 We need to develop lines and chemistry, and FAST. The established lines weren't cutting it, so Babs had to mix it up, now it's time to settle it down, establish lines, and get the lines to mesh together. We've got something that many other teams don't have; the capability to put together 3 top scoring lines and 1 mediocre line. Where most teams have one or two good lines, a mediocre line, and a checking line.

If they are going to do that, chances are they will wait until the playoffs. I hate to say it, but they have done that before in the post season, 06 against Edmonton comes to mind. I could never wish that upon the Redwings. I still believe they can get it together before then. If they are so terrible this year then need I remind you of the 1998-1999 season?
